Synopsis (short abstract) How and to what extent will fish be able to contribute to feeding 9 billion people in 2050 and beyond? Fish significantly contributed to human food supply and food security and nutrition (FSN) for more than 660 million fish-workers and their families. Fish provides more than 4.5 billion consumers with at least 15 percent of their average per capita intake of animal protein. Fish is more nutritious than staple foods such as cereals, providing in particular essential fatty acids and micronutrients and can play an extremely important role in improving the nutritional status of individuals, in particular those at risk such as children and women. Fish is an efficient converter of feed into high quality food, and it has a lower carbon footprint compared to other animal production systems. Because of all these attributes - fish should definitely be on the menu. This was the conclusion of the paper by of Bene et al. 2015 which called for a closer integration of fish into the overall debate and future policy about FSN.

    This issue of FAN contains an invited editorial on Nutrition-sensitive aquaculture and four main sections on: (1) Global aquaculture updates with an article on the 2nd International conference on nutrition ICN2. (2) Aquaculture updates by region providing information on ongoing projects, activities and events by region particularly: one article for Europe, five for Latin America and the Caribbean, three for the Near East and North Africa, and five for Sub-Saharan Africa.     This is the 52nd issue (2014) of the FAO Aquaculture Newsletter. It contains an editorial on FAO’s new strategic framework, and seven sessions on: (1) global/regional meetings such as the 34th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing; the 2nd Session of the Central Asian and Caucasus Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission; and the 5th Offshore Mariculture Conference.
