Book (series)Report of the Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 18–22 July 2005 (Includes a CD-ROM and a DVD) 2007
Also available in:
No results found.Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing has been identified as a major constraint to sustainable and responsible fisheries. IUU fishing occurs all over the world and involves a wide range of activities within domestic and international waters. It has harmful consequences on fisheries sustainability, conservation of marine resources and biodiversity and on the economies of developing countries and their efforts to develop sustainable fisheries. Although difficult to quantify, IUU is bec oming more rampant with fishers involved using more and more sophisticated methods to conduct illegal fishing and avoid detention. The Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop (GFETW) brought together operational-level monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) professionals for the global community who are dedicated to resolving IUU fishing issues. Hosted by the Government of Malaysia in cooperation with the MCS Network, the FAO FishCode Programme and the European Union, the Workshop pr ovided participants with training on a wide range of MCS topics and gave them the opportunity to share information and experiences, latest developments and new ways to improve fisheries enforcement. Among other subjects, the Workshop reviewed enforcement techniques and MCS operations through individual presentations, case studies and panel discussions. Participants discussed a wide range of tools available to assist countries in dealing more efficiently with IUU fishing, as well as methods of applying these tools through legal systems. Copies of individual PowerPoint presentations given by GFETW speakers and resource persons are provided on the CD-ROM attached to the inside back cover of the report. Also attached to the inside back cover is a copy of the FAO multi-media DVD (trilingual) on IUU fishing presented during the opening session of the workshop. -
Book (series)Report of the Meeting of the Global Record Specialized Core Working Groups, Rome, 30 September to 2 October 2015
(advanced copy)

No results found. The Meeting of the Global Record Specialized Core Working Groups (GRCGs) was held at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 30 September to 2 October 2015. The GRCGs were created to deal with specific technical issues, upon request of the Global Record Informal Open-Ended Technical and Advisory Working Group (GRWG) at its first meeting in February 2015. At this first meeting of the GRCGs, experts in the areas of data requirements, data exchange and third party data gathered to advance the discuss ions and work started earlier in 2015, through the virtual workspace. During this meeting the experts completed the first round of discussions and agreed on: i) the data fields required for each information module of the Global Record, their inclusion level, data types and related reference lists (the result can be consulted in Appendix B, Resulting Information Modules); ii) the third party data providers that would enhance the Global Record system; iii) the data formats and data transmission me chanisms for the submission of data, and iv) the need for capacity development to support Members in participating in the Global Record. The conclusions are to be put forward to the GRWG at its next meeting. Work in the three areas is ongoing, with some issues pending further discussion and others, such as the role of IHS Maritime & Trade as a possible third party data provider, to be further considered by the GRWG. -
Book (series)Report of the FAO/APFIC/SEAFDEC Regional Workshop on Port State Measures to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. Bangkok, Thailand, 31 March–4 April 2008. 2008
Also available in:
No results found. This document contains the report of the FAO/APFIC/SEAFDEC [Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/Asia Pacific Fisheries Commission/Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center] Regional Workshop on Port State Measures to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing, that was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 31 March to 4 April 2008. The objective of the Workshop was to develop national capacity and promote bilateral, subregional and/or regional coordination so t hat countries would be better placed to strengthen and harmonize port State measures and, as a result, implement further the 2001 FAO International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing, the 2005 FAO Model Scheme on Port State Measures to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing and contribute to the development of a legally-binding instrument on port State measures. The Workshop addressed: the background and framework fo r port State measures; the FAO Model Scheme including national plans of action to combat IUU fishing and IUU fishing activities in Southeast Asia; the FAO Model Scheme and regional approaches and the 2007 draft Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing; key elements of national laws, and the role of the Asia Pacific Fisheries Commission and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center; national coordination and impl ementation of port State measures; industry perspectives on port State measures, and responses to the questionnaire on port State measures. Working groups were formed to enhance the participatory nature of the Workshop and as a means of engendering broader and deeper discussion on concepts and issues relating to port State measures. A fictitious case study exercise was also undertaken to demonstrate how a port State might deal with a realistic IUU fishing problem. The final session o f the Workshop sought to identify key issues to be addressed on a regional basis as follow-up to the Workshop. Funding and support for the Workshop were provided by the FAO Regular Programme, by the Government of Norway through the Trust Fund for Port State Measures (MTF/GLO/206/MUL) and the FishCode Programme (MTF/GLO/125/MUL [Sweden-SIDA] [SWE/05/IUU Port State Measures/IUU fishing]).
