Synopsis (short abstract) Lebanon has been very heavily affected by the Syria crisis since 2011. Apart from Turkey, it received the highest number of refugees in the sub-region and has the highest number of refugees per capita. Agriculture is important to the entire population of Lebanon, farmers and consumers. And despite only contributing about 5.5%1 to the GDP, about 60 % of the population relies directly or indirectly on agricultural activities.

    The objective of this framework is to improve the coherence and effectiveness of FAO’s interventions in Lebanon under the umbrella of the United Nations System and to position FAO as a strategic partner for national agricultural and rural development. This framework is also a tool for resource mobilization that presents to donors and all other stakeholders a clear and concise picture of what FAO intends to do during the next four years in Lebanon. However, the framework remains a policy statemen t of intent and the attainment of its purpose and objectives requires joint efforts through partnerships with all stakeholders.

    This document is a collection of briefs on countries in which food security has been affected by conflict and other crises. Here is an overview of some key numbers: people in conflict affected states are up to three times more likely to be undernourished than those who are living in more stable developing countries. The most recent projections suggest that approximately half of the global poor now live in states characterized by conflict and violence. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have a strong interest, and a potentially important role to play, in supporting transitions towards peace.

    The Russian Federation and Ukraine are major global suppliers of cereals and sunflower oil, while the Russian Federation is also a leading exporter of fertilizers and energy. Due to the devastating war in Ukraine, global prices for these commodities have reached record highs. FAO Markets and Trade Division, with the FAO Investment Centre and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, have published this study on the potential impact of the war in Ukraine on food security and agrifood trade in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. Beyond a detailed analysis of how the war in Ukraine affects these countries, the report also contains a set of key policy recommendations to help governments cope with the unfolding situation and improve food security in the medium and long term. This publication is part of the Knowledge for Investment (K4I) series managed by FAO Investment Centre.
