No results found.This document is an attempt to present an overview of the technological options that are currently available to promote increased productivity and competitiveness of the cassava crop. These options could become an excellent strategy for the difficult task faced by the countries in the region that need to reduce poverty, hunger and the increased dependency on imported foods to attend the nutritional needs of their populations. This document is divided into three parts. The first part summariz es relevant background information on the current status of cassava globally and in the context of the Caribbean region. Part two is a compilation of the information collected via a survey administered with the collaboration of key resource persons in most countries of the region. Data obtained was complemented with updated information collected and compiled with the support of the Statistics Department, FAO Rome; and with data provided by the cassava practicioners (research and extension agents ), from 12 countries, who attended an International Training event organized by CLAYUCA, with financial support from the Colombian Government. The third part includes some concrete examples of potential opportunities that could be implemented in the region, using a three-pillar approach that CLAYUCA has been proposing, that includes: a) improved genetic resources; b) eco-efficient crop and soil management technologies; and c) value-added processing and utilization technologies. Some conclusions and recommendatios are also included. -

2017This publication details the experience of the Parliamentary Fronts Against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean in promoting legislation aimed at achieving the right to adequate food. It presents some of the lessons learned on how the parliamentary fronts work and the mechanisms that have proved useful to them. There is also a summary of the most significant legislative results achieved on (i) food security and nutrition, ii) school meals and healthy eating, and iii) family farming. This information will be of use to members of parliament and other interested parties looking to strengthen legal frameworks on food and nutrition. The general analysis is complemented by an annex containing detailed information on 15 regional and national laws that resulted from parliamentary front initiatives. -

The Parliamentary Front against Hunger ( for Latin America and the Caribbean ( began in 2009 within the framework of the Hunger Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative, as a policy process to set agenda and build political commitment for policy development and implementation against hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition Assistance provided thus far, has resulted in the establishment of platforms ( regional and subregional integrated by parliamentarians from ruling and opposition parties to permanently end hunger The importance of supporting the PFH has grown with the recognition of the significance of the work and commitment of legislators/parliamentarians as a key factor for placing Food and Nutrition Security ( and the fight against hunger at the highest possible level of political and legislative agendas As stated by the CARICOM, the PFH is being used as a vehicle to achieve SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) The project aimed to strengthen the elaboration and implementation of appropriate policies and legislation for food and nutrition security in selected Caribbean countries, with an effective institutional framework, linked with the key results identified by FAO and the governments of Grenada, Haiti and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, by supporting these countries’ parliaments and consolidating permanent and plural spaces within them, in the form of PFH To achieve this, FAO provided technical support based on the experiences of 21 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, where PFH chapters have been established.
