Synopsis (short abstract) The Key descriptors for olive consist of an initial minimum set of characterization and evaluation descriptors for Olea europaea, a member of the family Oleaceae. This strategic set aims to facilitate access to and utilization of this species, and it does not exclude the addition of other descriptors later. The key set of morphological characterization and utilization descriptors was defined through an online survey in which 36 experts from 22 organizations and universities from 19 countries participated. Survey results were subsequently validated in consultation with a Core Advisory Group.This work has been done jointly with the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture; the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), and the International Olive Council.

    Descriptors for Crop Wild Relatives conserved in situ (CWRI v.1) 2021

    This list of passport Descriptors for Crop Wild Relatives conserved in situ constitutes the minimum initial list for CWR in situ data exchange. For each descriptor, this tool provides a brief explanation of content, its coding scheme, and a suggested field name. It has been developed taking the Core Descriptors for in situ conservation of CWR v.1 published by Bioversity International in 2013 as the starting point. It also builds on recent experiences conducted by the Secretariat of FAO’s International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) in the context of the development of its Global Information System (GLIS). One of the main factors adversely affecting the conservation, use, monitoring and reporting of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA) is the lack of access to data and inefficient exchange of information. This lack of standardization had prevented the PGRFA community from exchanging PGRFA data worldwide and had, for years, been one of the main challenges for the effective conservation and sustainable use of plant material. The Secretariat of the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) undertook to address the gaps and the lack of coherence in the documentation methods for plant resources, in particular for Crop Wild Relatives (CWR) conserved under in situ conditions, through the development of an international standard contained in this booklet

In addition to FAOSTYLE in six languages, this guidance also includes: "Publishing policy", providing high-level guidance aimed at those involved in the creation or approval of a publishing plan; "Authorship and plagiarism guidelines", outlining the principles and criteria for authorship of FAO publications; "Graphic design guidelines", focusing on the practical application of FAO's visual identity and design standards; “Responsible use of AI in publishing”, covering how to use AI responsibly and ethically when producing a publication; “Open Access policy”, a summary of the policy that encourages the wide use, reproduction and dissemination of the intellectual property that FAO produces; and "Digital publishing", guidance on how to create a digital (HTML) publication. Publishing at FAO is a living document and will continue to evolve as publishing practices evolve. A new section on managing a publishing project is forthcoming. Last updated June 2025.
