Synopsis (short abstract) This country profile describes the state of the water resources and water use, as well as the state of agricultural water management in Turkey. The aim of this report is to describe the particularities of the country and the problems met in the development of the water resources, and irrigation in particular. Irrigation trends, existing policies and legislation to water use in agriculture, possible treaties and agreements between countries as well as prospects for water management in agriculture are presented, as described in literature. The AQUASTAT country profiles are based on the information available at the time they have been written or updated, generally every five to ten years. For the most recent reliable country data, reference is made to the AQUASTAT main database.

The report assesses the occurrence and impacts of drought, the current policies underlying drought management as well as the mitigation measures and responses adopted in Central Asia and Turkey, with a focus on Agriculture Sector. It is part of a series of similar studies carried out in different regions and countries of the world, with the objective of shedding light on drought effects, sensitizing policy-makers for the much needed paradigm shift to pro-active drought management planning and pr oviding guidance for the development of such policies. The studies are carried out by FAO, in collaboration with the Water for Food Institute, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA, as a direct contribution to FAO's Strategic Objective "Increasing the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises".
