Synopsis (short abstract) A concise summary of the state of knowledge and experience concerning sustainable forest management, prepared as an input to the World Bank's Forest Policy Implementation Review and Strategy. An overview of experiences gained from different forest management systems is given, followed by a discussion of the outlook for forest resources and for forest product markets. Market, policy and institutional failure is analysed and appropriate responses are outlined. Finally, approaches to international co-operation are discussed.

This working paper seeks to define sustainable forest management(SFM) in terms of how different management objectives should be balanced and the spatial and temporal dimensions involved. The technical feasibility of SFM is discussed with reference to experiences in different regions. Its financial and institutional feasibility is also covered with regard to factors leading to market and policy failure. International aid to the forest sector is analyzed according to how it can contribute to the s ustainable management of different forest types.

This paper presents projections of wood and wood product supply and demand to the year 2010. It discusses emerging developments in the availability and management of forest resources and in forest products processing and trade, which have the potential to affect forest products markets in the future.
