Synopsis (short abstract) There is a strong imperative to rebuild Iraq’s agriculture sector as it is a major provider of employment and income in rural and peri-urban areas. This will allow for the return of millions of internally displaced people (IDP) in Iraq to their areas of origin, following the retaking of Iraqi areas that used to be under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) – i.e. all or parts of the five affected governorates of Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, Ninewa and Salah al-Din. The impact of conflict caused by ISIL on the agriculture sector has been devastating and includes huge population movements, destruction of and damage to water systems, irrigation facilities and other agricultural infrastructure, disruption of value chains and losses of personal assets, crop and livestock production and food supplies. In response, the Government of Iraq has developed the Iraq Reconstruction and Development Framework (IRFD), which contributes to the Iraq Vision 2030 and National Development Plan (2018–2022). Guided by IRFD, Iraq’s United Nations Country Team (UNCT) formulated the Recovery and Resilience Programme (RRP), which prioritizes three (out of nine ) components to be implemented in the retaken areas with high priority: (i) preventing violent extremism; (ii) restoring communities; and (iii) restoring agriculture and water systems. The RRP was presented at the Kuwait International Conference for Iraq's Reconstruction in February 2018, which was jointly organized by the Government of Iraq, the World Bank and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.

    FAO supports member countries to meet the challenges of an urbanizing world by promoting the integration of Urban and Peri-urban Horticulture (UPH) into national and local agricultural development strategies, food and nutrition programmes and urban planning. UPH is the cultivation of a wide range of crops – including fruit, vegetables, roots, tubers and ornamental plants – within cities and towns and in their surrounding areas. It is a key component of robust and resilient urban food systems whi ch empower the urban poor. UPH is already widely practised in developing countries, accounting for more than half of the fruit and vegetable production in cities in Burundi, Cape Verde, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique and Zambia.

    Kyrgyzstan is classified as a land locked developing ( and low income food deficit country ( The poultry sector in the rural areas of the Kyrgyzstan is in its development phase and has great potential for creating jobs, improving the nutrition of rural residents, and generating income Only about half of the rural households currently keep backyard poultry The flocks are mostly of low quality and poorly managed, and therefore have low productivity and efficiency characteristics Traditionally, ruminants are managed by males in Kyrgyz villages, while poultry falls under the responsibility of women In most households, women directly manage the small livestock, processing the products for family consumption, and marketing the surpluses for income generation The main goal of the project was to facilitate the expansion of family poultry farming in rural and peri urban areas of Kyrgyzstan, in order to reduce poverty and improve the nutrition of rural residents.

    This presentation has been shown during the 5th Annual Gathering of the signatory cities of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP) in Montpellier (9 Oct. 2019). It summarizes the implementation of a pilot project by the Nairobi City County (Kenya), with the support of FAO and RUAF, related to the monitoring framework dedicated to urban food policy: process or indicators selection; data collection; main results; lessons learnt. The monitoring framework is based of the 37 recommended actions of the MUFPP. This presentation is a "grey document" linked to the publication "City guidance for implementing the MUFPP monitoring framework".
