No results found.This report presents a comprehensive analysis of the fisheries and aquaculture value chain in Senegal, with a specific focus on women’s roles, challenges, and trade potential in the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Developed under the FAO–ITC joint programme Empowering Women and Boosting Livelihoods through Agricultural Trade: Leveraging the AfCFTA (EWAT), the study explores how women in Senegal’s fisheries sector, particularly in the artisanal and processing segments, can benefit from regional trade opportunities. Using a mixed-methods approach, the report combines quantitative trade data with qualitative insights gathered through field research and stakeholder consultations in key coastal regions. It documents women’s vital contributions across the value chain, especially in processing and local trade, while identifying persistent structural barriers including limited access to finance, infrastructure, formal markets, and decision-making spaces.Senegal maintains a trade surplus in all segments of its fisheries and aquaculture sector and holds a revealed comparative advantage in more than 50 export categories. If supported by targeted policy measures, these trade gains could translate into meaningful benefits for women along the value chain, particularly in processing and small-scale trade. The report underscores that realizing this potential will depend on addressing trade frictions, strengthening women’s organizations, and ensuring that trade expansion efforts are explicitly inclusive.The report concludes with actionable recommendations to enhance women’s economic empowerment, including gender-responsive infrastructure, targeted financing, institutional support, and improved market access, positioning the AfCFTA as a powerful instrument to advance inclusive and sustainable trade-led growth in Senegal’s fisheries sector. -

The mangrove crab fishery (Scylla scerrata) in Madagascar is an exclusively traditional fishing activity. Crab fishers walk or canoe through the mangroves and use very simple techniques and fishing gear such as a line or a hook mounted on a stick. It is estimated that about 80,000 people are involved in fishing and collecting mangrove crabs in Madagascar. Fishing and landing sites are often very difficult to access, and storage and transport facilities are very rudimentary: this is a sector that has significant post-harvest losses. In recent years, some mangrove areas – those most easily accessible - have already been over-exploited, resulting in a reduction in the average size of crabs caught. -

No results found.This is a weighty report of formidable bulk and understandably so. Rarely has a Workshop in Bangladesh or anywhere else been so comprehensive in mandate or assembled such an array of fisheries expertise. Why was the workshop held? Quite simply, to give effect to Bangladesh's vision of fisheries development and management, set forth in its Perspective Development Plan for 1995-2010. That plan seeks to increase production of fish, manage and conserve fisheries resources for present and futur e generations, encourage private enterprise, increase overall economic growth, and generate employment and incomes, particularly for the rural poor and unemployed youth. These are comprehensive goals, and call for clear guidelines and strategies to address the problems and concerns of fisheries. The National Workshop on Fisheries Resources Development and Management, in Bangladesh, held 29 October-1 November, 1995, in Dhaka, sought to evolve such guidelines and strategies. The Worksh op's recommendations are wide-ranging. They relate to the management of inland fisheries, brackishwater and marine fisheries resources; the management needs of freshwater, marine and brackishwater aquaculture; integrated management of land and water; financing of all these sectors; the legal framework for fishing community development and management; the marketing of fish and fish products. In sum, the Workshop (sponsored jointly by the FAO through BOBP, and the ODA) left nothing uncovered or untouched. The report of this Workshop should therefore be a valuable document - for research and reference, and for the needs of everyone who is concerned with fisheries development and management in Bangladesh.

No results found.The Dagaa fishery is still an artisanal activity. Both fishing and processing are still based on traditional methods that are not suitable for a responsible global market. Fish handling and processing are still far from the minimal hygienic standards. Moreover, due to the artisanal nature as well as the low value of the product, data collection remains a challenge. This on-going problem concerns all levels of the value chain. Despite the issues mentioned above, the potential of this fishery is v ery large and still underexploited, especially in Uganda. Research on the nutritional value of Dagaa and similar small pelagic fish highlight the exceptional quality of these fish if processed well. The fact that the fish is eaten whole ensures the intake of essential micro elements and vitamins. The Dagaa value chain is rather complex and can have different structures. It is mostly an informal chain that involves many players. The value chain starts with fishers, continues with processors, trad ers, transporters, importers, retailers and ends with consumers. Some actors accumulate sometimes 2 or even 3 of these activities and there can be several intermediaries in the trading activities. The final use of dried Dagaa can either be human food or animal feed. As it is now, it seems that a large majority of the dried Dagaa goes into animal feed (up to 80% mentioned in many reports). However, the field mission revealed that the final destination of Dagaa can change both geographically and c onsumption wise. Despite the generally low quality of the dried product, it seems that the fish is reaching more and more distant markets in the region including Republic of South Africa, Zimbabwe for instance. Sales in Cambodia and Vietnam were also reported to the consultants during their visit to Kirumba market in Mwanza. -

No results found.The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.
