Synopsis (short abstract) The research vessel (R/V) Dr Fridtjof Nansen is a state of the art research vessel that serves the countries partners to the EAF-Nansen Programme “Supporting the Application of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries management considering climate and pollution impacts” to generate knowledge on resources and ecosystems by use of the art gears and technologies, providing key information of complex and changing marine ecosystems to the benefit of partner countries. The current R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen is the third research vessel to bear the name. The first vessel was launched in 1974 and served for 19 years. The second vessel was built in 1993 and sailed over 605 000 nautical miles until its retirement in 2016. The current vessel is owned by the Norwegian Agency for development cooperation (Norad), operated by the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in close consultation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), who is responsible for the implementation of the EAF-Nansen Programme and enabling the vessel to fly the UN flag as a house flag.     Under the EAF-Nansen Programme (Supporting the application of the ecosystem approach to fisheries management considering climate and pollution impacts), a regional workshop was organized in Accra, Ghana from 4 to 6 July 2017. The main objectives of the workshop were to introduce partners to the components and expected outputs of the new EAF-Nansen Programme, and to identify priorities for the upcoming survey and in the programme, in general, for the countries of the Gulf of Guinea. The workshop was attended by 28 participants from fishery research and management institutions of the Gulf of Guinea countries, as well as from the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries (DoF) and FAO. Dans le cadre du Programme EAF-Nansen (Appuyer l'application de l'approche écosystémique de la gestion des pêches en tenant compte des impacts du climat et de la pollution), un atelier régional a été organisé à Accra, au Ghana, du 4 au 6 juillet 2017. Les principaux objectifs de l'atelier étaient de présenter aux partenaires les composantes et les résultats attendus du nouveau Programme EAF-Nansen, et d’identifier les priorités pour la prochaine campagne et du programme, en général, pour les pays du golfe de Guinée. L’atelier a réuni 28 participants des institutions de recherche et de gestion halieutiques des pays du golfe de Guinée, ainsi que de l’Institut norvégien de recherche marine (IMR), de la Direction norvégienne des pêches (DP) et de la FAO.

    The research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen operates within the EAF-Nansen project of FAO, and carries out fish resources and ecosystems surveys in the maritime waters of developing countries, particularly in Africa. The surveys are facilitated by FAO and the vessel flies a UN flag. The publication will, among others, examine the following at a regional scale: cross boundary composition and diversity of fish in the Western Indian Ocean, cross shelf and bathymetric productivity of fisheries as measure d by estimates of fish biomass and catch rates, and long term trends in the abundance and distribution of main species groups. It will also look at how the data and information from the surveys have been used by national scientists and others, governments of the region and the regional fisheries body in the management of the fisheries. The contribution made towards capacity development in marine and fisheries research through the Nansen surveys are evaluated.
