Synopsis (short abstract) This pocketbook aims at raising awareness on Ugani Kiganjani to all its potential beneficiaries in the food and agriculture sector, that involve a wide range of stakeholders, from simple farmers to extension services in the field, representatives of the private and public sectors, academics, media, general audience. It is important to have multipliers of these messages, consisting of experts and representatives of the national authorities involved in food and agriculture trained on the app and ready to disseminate their knoweldge to the farmers and various stakeholders in the field so that they will be aware of its benefits in their daily lives and willing to download it and use it, to improve their production, consumption and therefore their livelihoods. This publication aims at helping these extension services to present it as an attractive solution for all stakeholders involved in the agriculture and food sector at all levels, from farmers, representatives of local authorities to business holders, academics, high level governments representatives etc but with a focus on its potential users in the field raising awareness on what the app is, its benefits, target audiences, and how to use it.

Ugani Kiganjani is an innovative, simple and affordable mobile and web-based digital agriculture extension service available for weather, crop calendars, nutrition, livestock and fisheries sub sectors in Tanzania. It is a key component of the Agriculture Digital Services Portfolio provided by FAO to member countries and complementing other digital services portfolios aiming to serve the farmers, including M-Kilimo and EMA-i. This publication aims at presenting it as an attractive solution for all stakeholders involved in the agriculture and food sector at all levels, from simple farmers to high level governments representatives but targeting here more specifically the farmers in the field to show them what the app is, its benefits and how to use and download it for their own benefits.

‘UshauriKilimo’(http://ushaurikilimo.org) is a Swahili word from ‘Ushauri’ and ‘Kilimo’ which means ‘advisory’ and ‘agriculture’ respectively. ‘UshauriKilimo’ is an information system for agricultural advisory services. It is an agro-advisory and extension service system that allows any actor in the agricultural sector to ask for advisory services to an agriculture extension officer using either the web or a mobile phone. The mobile and web based advisory information system for farmers was developed in collaboration with the Kilosa Community Radio, using participatory action research to ensure the improved extension services would correspond to the needs of the end‐users. The Web‐based Farmers Advisory Information System (M-FAIS) and Mobile-based Farmers Advisory Information Systems (W-FAIS) were released for public use in January 2015, after an awareness raising campaign conducted in Kilosa District of Tanzania.
