Rural women play a key role in the agriculture and food system, yet, besides the agriculture activities, they have to do home chores as well. FAO, through the Rural Women Economic Empowerment project (RWEE) distributed energy-efficient cooking stoves to reduce the workload and so that they may get time to take care of themselves. During COVID-19 restrictions in Rwanda, husbands have been supporting women with the household chores to reduce their workload. New projects were launched to support the government of Rwanda, such as, one that will introduce fertilizer recommendations to improve Rwanda’s soil fertility and increase food security for smallholder farmers. As the world emerges out of the COVID-19 crisis, we celebrate the efforts of all the farmers who have kept the food chain/system going, making sure people can still get food in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis. We encourage people to eat fruits and vegetables to improve their immune system and promote healthy diets through the international year of fruits and vegetables running this year 2021.

FAO has acted swiftly to avert the impact of the floods that beset farmers in Kirehe district. The emergency project will see agricultural inputs such as certified seeds and fertilizers distributed to farmers to recommence their crop production, and rehabilitate the irrigation infrastructures destroyed by the sediments depositions in the lowlands. Support to Rwanda’s e-Commerce will see the industry grow for the benefit of smallholder farmers and all those in the agribusiness value chain. Particularly, our efforts channeled through the new project launched, will ensure farmers become more competitive on local and foreign markets using ICTs.

To respond to the dramatically growing food demand requires changing the way we do agriculture. Moving from subsistence to business-oriented farming. This Newsletter combines stories of farmers who say what they are doing to play their role in the journey of achieving Zero Hunger. It also shows what the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is doing to leverage strong synergies and partnerships to promote agriculture innovations system, develop the small livestock sector, fight food waste, and generally encourage and celebrate food heroes.
