Synopsis (short abstract) This case study highlights the steady renewal of the Peam Khleang Community Fishery (CFi) in Kandal Province, where local management once struggled to protect resources and maintain participation. Through support from the CAPFISH-Capture Programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Fisheries Administration (FiA) of MAFF with technical guidance from FAO, the community has strengthened its internal governance and diversified its livelihood base.A fair and community-led re-election of the CFi committee helped restore trust and clarify responsibilities. Continuous training enabled committee members to work more confidently with commune authorities and FiA officers. The adoption of the SMART patrolling system made surveillance more systematic and evidence-based, improving compliance with fisheries regulations.At the same time, intentional efforts to involve women increased their visibility and influence in decision-making processes. The introduction of alternative income-generating activities—such as small-scale aquaculture, poultry raising, and vegetable production—has reduced direct pressure on natural fish stocks. Revenues are now reinvested into shared needs identified by the community, creating a cycle of benefits that supports stronger governance, social inclusion, and sustainable fisheries management.

    In Cambodia, the fisheries co-management emerged as a way to ensure the governance, environmental, social–economic sustainability of aquatic resources and Community Fisheries members who rely on the sector for their economic wellbeing. The factsheet describes how the Smart Fisheries Co-Management (SFC) project is working to formulate and execute efficient co-management strategies and frameworks for sustainable governance of fisheries at the national and local levels. The SFC project operates specifically in the Kratie and Stung Treng provinces on the Mekong River with the aim to empower the members of community fisheries and promote the conservation of aquatic resources.

    Women's contribution to community livelihoods and nutritional security in the small-scale fisheries sector in Madagascar 2025

    This document aims to shed light on the diverse contributions of women to small-scale fisheries, emphasizing their direct influence on the economic landscape, dietary diversity, nutritional intake, and household food security in Madagascar. It supports the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (hereafter referred to as the Small-Scale Fisheries Guidelines), to which Madagascar is a signatory , and which were adopted by the FAO Committee on Fisheries in 2014 (FAO, 2015). The analytical framework is based on the methodology outlined in the study Illuminating Hidden Harvests (IHH): The Contribution of Small-Scale Fisheries to Sustainable Development, developed collaboratively by FAO, Duke University, and the WorldFish Center. This initiative, which encompassed around 50 country case studies –including Madagascar – aims to generate and share new information on small-scale fisheries to guide policy decisions and practices (FAO et al., 2023 ; Basurto et al., 2025).By identifying constraints that limit women’s participation in small-scale fishery value chains, this document aims to provide recommendations and strategies to the Government to enhance women’s empowerment and resilience to economic challenges, shocks, and climate change impacts.
