    The United States of America funded the project OSRO/GLO/107/USA for a total of USD 1.9 million. The main objective of this project was to improve the coordination of animal health emergencies at global, regional and national levels through regional and global animal health coordination mechanism strategy, assessments in over 32 countries and tools aimed at supporting governance strategies and training in good emergency management practice. This allowed to enhance capability at regional levels, facilitate the needs of the animal health emergency sector and mitigate the risks of animal health events of current or potential international concern as well as strength resilience building in at risk countries.

    The United States of America contributed USD 2 974 318 to FAO’s project entitled “Risk mitigation and management of health threats from animals in Viet Nam”. The project’s objective was to strengthen animal health systems in order to reduce the risks and impact of emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and biothreats through an inclusive One Health approach. The project strengthened the information sharing capacities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to better mitigate risks and manage health threats from many different animals. It also improved the capacities of the Department of Animal Health and relevant stakeholders in early detection and response to avian influenza health threats, among other results.

    The United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency, through its Biological Threat Reduction Program, contributed USD 3 505 221 to strengthen central and regional veterinary services in six targeted governorates in Iraq (Anbar, Al-Muthanna, Basra, Duhok, Ninawa and Wasit) by building veterinary staff’s capacities to detect, diagnose and rapidly report highly pathogenic animal diseases and by providing equipment to veterinary laboratories. Over the course of the project, FAO, in collaboration with its partners in the Government of Iraq, reached 1 605 people (1 338 veterinarians and 267 animal health workers, animal owners and livestock traders) through specialized training programmes and awareness workshops to achieve the project’s objectives.
