No results found.Agricultural production more than tripled between 1960 and 2015, owing in part to productivity-enhancing technologies and a significant expansion in the use of land, water, and other natural resources for agricultural purposes. Today, more than ever, agriculture faces multiple and complex challenges. It has to provide sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet boosting demand by a growing and progressively more prosperous population, and ensure food security for all. Prepared to support the G20 Presidency of Japan and the G20 Agriculture Deputies, these three background notes provide an overview on the following interlinked issues: (i) the policy challenges for strengthening the participation of farmers into modern value chains and promoting value addition, inclusion, sustainability and rural economic growth; (ii) the need for a transformation in the skillset of agricultural workers and a renewed focus on human capital development in agriculture, and (iii) the contribution of agriculture to the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. -

No results found.This publication showcases initiatives that have been successfully implemented to help youth build resilience in the agrifood system, despite the severe consequences of climate change and formidable social and economic challenges. It aims to inspire potential policies and programmes by portraying key needs, challenges and initiatives, as well as lessons learned and opportunities for helping to improve the resilience of livelihoods for youth in small-scale food production. The aim is to draw recommendations from these initiatives, building on the Koronivia Joint work on Agriculture (KJWA) – a landmark decision under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that recognizes the unique potential of agriculture in tackling climate change. -

No results found.This project supports the Government of the Philippines in efforts to conserve the country’s globally important agrobiodiversity and traditional agroecosystems. The project comprised three interlinked components: mainstreaming agrobiodiversity into policy and legal frameworks; piloting activities to expand dynamic conservation practices in three pilot communities; and disseminating learning and preparing for scaling up. The project aligned strongly with Philippines Government, FAO and GEF priorities, and impressive progress was made on policy objectives. There was less progress in enhancing dynamic conservation practices for agrobiodiversity in the pilot communities. Recommendations focused on developing a successful exit strategy, capturing experience effectively, and carrying out a systems review for future FAO-supported agrobiodiversity projects.
