    The Global sustainable fisheries management and biodiversity conservation in the ABNJ Program (Common Oceans ABNJ Program), supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is a five-year Program that started its activities in early 2014. With the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as coordinating agency, the Common Oceans ABNJ Program is working in close collaboration with two other GEF implementing agencies, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Bank, as well as other executing partners, including Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), national governments, the private sector, and NGOs. This brochure introduces the for Projects that make up the Common Oceans ABNJ Program, and that are working together to achieve efficient and sustainable management of fisheries resources and biodiversity conservation in the ABNJ, and to achieve global targets agreed in the international fora.

    As a part of Grenada’s Blue Week 2016 and Investment Conference, the Global Ocean Forum, FAO, and the project partners of the Common Oceans ABNJ Capacity Project organized a workshop on Capacity Development to Improve the Management of Marine Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ): Needs, Experiences, Options, and Opportunities, held from May 18–21, 2016 in St. George’s, Grenada. The workshop aimed at 1. discussing and exchanging information and perspectives towards a broader understanding of the needs and opportunities in the development of capacity regarding ABNJ; 2. contributing information on capacity development to the global deliberations towards a legallybinding international instrument on BBNJ under UNCLOS; and 3. formulating the next steps towards advancing capacity development regarding ABNJ, building on past and ongoing initiatives and experiences (especially the outputs of the Common Oceans Program), and responding to global prescriptions on capacity development in rel ation to marine resources and their management.

    This brochure introduces the Common Oceans ABNJ Program supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with 50 million USD. FAO is the coordinating agency of the Program which started in 2014, working in close collaboration with two other GEF implementing agencies; the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Bank, as well as the Global Ocean Forum (GOF), WWF, Conservation International, and IUCN and other partners. The brochure presents the four projects which constitute th e Program, including a brief summary of both the Program and the individual Projects and their recent progress and achievements achieved so far. The contact details have been updated with the new website address and link to social media where additional information can be found.
