Synopsis (short abstract) The Regional Initiative for the Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR) is implemented by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) with support from FAO, which concurrently executes its own regional initiative on water scarcity. Through an integrated assessment methodology, which includes regional climate modelling, hydrological modelling, multisectoral vulnerability assessment and integrated mapping, the RICCAR has produced a series of modelling outputs, together with technical materials and analyses on climate change indices and adaptation. The availability of and access to these data and analyses are essential for adaptation planning, policy formation and decision-making processes related to climate change in the Arab region. The data, outputs and knowledge products generated through the RICCAR and other related regional projects were made available on the Regional Knowledge Hub (RKH) Data Portal.

    This working paper takes stock of Pakistan's water resource availability, delineating water supply system and its sources including precipitation and river flows, and the impact of increasing climatic variability on the water supply system. In particular, the paper focuses on the current water usage and requirements in the agricultural sector, and how changing climatic conditions will affect the consumption patterns. With inflows expected to become more variable in the coming years, the severity of climatic extremities will become more pronounced, driving up water demands in addition to the demand increase from a rising population and urbanization. Over extraction of groundwater resources is also disturbing the water calculus and pushing the country towards a critical demand-supply gap.
