Are you ready to lead? Using responsible business conduct to address risks in pineapple businesses 2024
    Also available in:

Responsible business conduct (RBC), implemented through due diligence, can help pineapple producers and businesses improve the sustainability of their operations and gain or maintain access to markets. By adopting RBC and due diligence processes, businesses can mitigate social and environmental risks, avoid financial losses, and enhance long-term profitability. To support this effort, the Responsible Fruits Project prepared the guide "Responsible business conduct in the pineapple industry: A guide for producers and exporters," which focuses on Step 2 of the due diligence process: identifying and prioritizing risks of negative impacts, and provides strategies for addressing these risks as outlined in Step 3 (cease, remedy, prevent, and/or mitigate risks). This technical brief summarizes the guide’s content and aims to introduce readers to implementing RBC and due diligence in the pineapple sector.

Small actors in agricultural value chains are tied to markets through a series of forward and backward business linkages, which incorporate various types of business models. The complexity of these business models varies according to the commodity, number of actors involved, local context and market structure. Aimed at designers of agricultural value chain projects, rural development projects and enterprise development projects, together with grassroots NGOs that implement smallholder commercial ization projects, these guidelines have been developed to facilitate the design and implementation of interventions that strengthen business models linking smallholders to value chains. An important contribution of this publication to existing literature on agricultural value chains is the guidance it provides on designing business model strategies that do not only link smallholders to markets, but that also encourage practitioners to consider the quality of market inclusion and its impact on po verty reduction.
