ProjectFormulation and Review of Fully-Fledged Project Document for "Strengthening Climate Resilience of Vulnerable Agriculture Livelihoods in Iraq's Rural Communities" Project - TCP/IRQ/3803 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Iraq has experienced significant and interconnected political, economic, environmental and security challenges over the past few years, and the effects of climate change are exacerbating the situation. Increased temperatures, outdated irrigation infrastructures, droughts, energy shortage, the lack of skills of both farmers and extension officers and an incomplete policy and strategic framework were the main constraints to climate change adaptation in Iraq, especially, in the farming communities of the central and southern plains. In addition, given that about 25 percent of the target areas’ population is employed in agriculture and produce around 40 percent of the country’s rice, working to stabilize the water supply would contribute to ensure food security and social stability in the country. This project aimed to support Iraq national institutions to develop a full Green Climate Fund (GCF) project to enhance climate resilience of rural livelihoods through climate-adaptive technologies and good farming practices that will stabilize water availability in the governorates of Karbala, Muthanna and Najaf. Through its main output, the drafting of a full funding proposal (FFP), the project aimed to mobilize significant financial resources that will improve the most vulnerable population livelihoods (around 650 000 individuals, among which 321 000 are women). The drafting of the GCF sought to closely engage government entities, researchers and agricultural extension officers, and looked to reach at least 1.9 million farmers to foster their cropping systems under improved institutional arrangements and climate-smart agriculture methodologies and use of land. -
ProjectEmpowering Rural Communities in Central Asia through Digital Transformation in Agriculture - FMM/GLO/171/MUL 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Rural communities in Europe and Central Asia grapple with a triple challenge: the urban-rural gap, gender disparities and the digital divide, which perpetuate a cycle of decline characterized by limited economic opportunities and inadequate services. Digital technologies have the potential to significantly alleviate the challenges encountered in rural areas by enabling instant virtual communication and access to e-services. Grounded in the FAO 1 000 Digital Villages Initiative (DVI), which aims to transform villages in Europe and Central Asia into hubs that are smarter, greener and richly digitally connected and interconnected, the project focused on accelerating the digital transformation of agriculture and rural areas in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Its efforts centred on laying the foundations for the development of digital villages across the countries with the goal to empower every village and rural community to utilize digital technologies to increase agricultural productivity and access to services and uplift rural livelihoods by leveraging their local strengths. -

Also available in:
No results found. The Flexible Voluntary Contribution dedicated USD 3 million to a four-year initiative in Malawi to address community resilience to climate change in the Mwanza and Neno districts through the subprogramme “Promoting coherence between disaster risk reduction, climate action and social protection in sub-Saharan Africa (Malawi)”. Implementation was carried out in partnership with the Government of Malawi and the subprogramme received technical support from different technical units from FAO headquarters. At district level, the implementation focused on the districts of Mwanza and Neno. The subprogramme aimed at strengthening capacities of national government institutions, local authorities and farming communities to cope with impacts of climate change while increasing food and nutrition security and the resilience of poor and vulnerable farmers in Malawi.
