Synopsis (short abstract) An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Ethiopia from 4 November to 1 December 1995 to estimate the production of the 1995 Meher (main) season cereal and pulse crops, forecast 1995/96 Belg (secondary) season production, estimate national food requirements in 1996 and assess the food aid needs for that year. The Mission members visited all the zones in the four main crop producing regions of the country, but were unable to visit regions in the far west or the far east, whic h a re largely pastoralist or hunter/gatherer domains, contributing little to the national harvest. This year the Mission was joined by observers from the major donors, including representatives from the European Union (EU), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Christian Relief Development Association (CRDA), Save the Child ren Fund (SCF, UK), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and CARE International, who travelled with the team s and monitored activities during the extensive field visits.

    This year’s FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission was divided into two parts. The first (a joint WFP/Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission (DPPC) team) conducted its food needs assessment over a period of one month ending at mid-November 1998. Its objective was to assess food aid requirements for 1999, based on extensive field analysis at woreda (district) level. The second part of the overall mission, conducted by an FAO team assisted by national consultants and MOA officers , was responsible for preparing quantitative estimates of cereal and pulse production from the 1998 meher crop. These crop estimates were combined with the food aid needs assessment to identify the location of deficit and surplus areas, and to provide information on the feasibility of local food purchases. The team collected information between 14 November and 5 December 1998. The food aid needs assessment team visited 100 woredas using 12 groups with separate itineraries. Staff of WFP, DP PC and MOA, together with representatives of some donors and NGOs, conducted the field work. The information was collated by WFP, Addis Ababa, and agreed with DPPC prior to the finalization of the Mission estimates.

    An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Ethiopia from 7 to 29 November 1996 to estimate the production of the 1996 Meher (main) season cereal and pulse crops, forecast the 1997 Belg (secondary) season production, estimate national food requirements for 1997 and assess the food aid needs for that year. The Mission visited all the zones in the four main crop producing regions and the capitals of most of the minor crop producing regions. Specific districts previously identified a s in need of assistance were also visited. This year, the Mission was joined by observers who travelled with the teams and monitored events on behalf of their agencies: the European Union (EU), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Save the Children Fund (SCF-UK) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS). As in previous years, FAO teams, acting independently, concentrated on a ssessing production and food supply situation and were accompanied by specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) throughout the visits. WFP teams visiting food deficit areas concentrated on determining household food requirements and were accompanied by zonal and regional Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Commission (DPPC) staff.

    An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Ethiopia from 2 November to 2 December 1997 to estimate the production of the 1997 Meher (main) season cereal and pulse crops, forecast the 1998 Belg (secondary) season, and estimate import requirements for 1998, as well as food aid needs. This year, observers from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Care Int ernational travelled with the teams and monitored events on behalf of their agencies. In addition, the Mission was provided with vulnerability maps, price fluctuation charts and reports on food security from USAID (FEWS), the EU, the UNDP Emergency Unit for Ethiopia and WFP’s VAM Unit in Addis Ababa.
