No results found.Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been globally recognized as an emerging public-health threat. Every year AMR kills an estimated 700 000 people worldwide, most of these in developing countries. It is estimated that by 2050 if not addressed, this number may rise to 10 million, having severe adverse effects on the global economy. In addition, global demand for meat has increased by more than 60 percent in the past decade. Thus, protecting the food chain from resistant pathogens contamination will be expensive if no measures are taken to reduce the usage of antimicrobials, specifically antibiotics in animal production. India developed its National Strategic Action Plan (NAP) for AMR through an extensive consultative process and in the true spirit of a One Health approach, providing equal representation of human health, animal health and environmental sectors in its implementation. The NAP articulates the need to initiate laboratory-based surveillance to understand the magnitude and dynamics of AMR and antimicrobial use (AMU) in various sectors. -

No results found.Recognizing that agrifood value chains (AFVCs) are essential to ensure food security and foster structural change, FAO seeks to reassess the array of policies and interventions needed to protect and strengthen AFVCs in low-income countries and fragile states. This White Paper aims to contribute to this initiative by shedding light on largely unaccounted-for market structures at midstream segments of AFVCs. Building on the field of Industrial Organization in economics, we develop a theoretical framework and a related simulation tool that one can inform with existing or specifically collected data. Simulation outcomes help predict how different types of shocks may affect key food security outcomes, under different levels of concentration in midstream segments of AFVCs. We illustrate this approach using data from the Ethiopian wheat AFVC in 2013. -

No results found.In 2019, FAO launched the Integrated Regional Project (TCP/RLA/3708 and OSRO/GLO/812/NOR), with the aim of designing and adopting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) containment strategies based on the existing risks in terrestrial and aquatic animal production. One of the project outcomes was a qualitative assessment of the risks of AMR in terrestrial and aquatic animal production systems, using the 'FAO tool for a situation analysis of AMR risks in the food and agriculture sectors', developed by the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (FAO RLC). The tool aims to provide a qualitative and systematic assessment of the risks and gaps of animal production systems (terrestrial and aquatic species) related to AMR at the national level, and which can affect both animal and human health. This report represents a summary of the results obtained from the application of the tool in six Latin American countries, from 2019 to 2021. The results show the evaluation of the factors involved in the epidemiological pathways of AMR, the mitigation measures associated with these pathways, and the sustainability aspects of the system that are connected to the generation and dissemination of AMR from the animal production chain.
