ProjectSupporting Development of Agriculture Land Markets to Bring Abandoned Land into Production - TCP/MCD/3802 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Farm structure in North Macedonia features numerous small family farms with an average farm size of between 1.8 and 1.9 hectares and a few larger corporate farms. Around 40 percent of the total arable agricultural land is state-owned. Excessive fragmentation is evident, with on average five to seven land parcels per farm. Although the average farm size decreased after independence in 1991, recent trends show a rebound. Factors such as excessive land fragmentation and small farm sizes are resulting in low productivity, competitiveness and profitability of farms. Rural outmigration contributes to widespread abandonment of arable agricultural land, with, on average, 32 percent of the arable land in North Macedonia being unutilized. The Government of North Macedonia recognized the potential of bringing back into production both private and state-owned unutilized agricultural land to boost local food production, improve family farm competitiveness and productivity, and stimulate agricultural land markets amid the COVID-19 crisis and multiple crises in the region. -
ProjectSupporting Developing Countries to Integrate their Agricultural Sectors into National Adaptation Plans - UNFA/GLO/616/UND 2021

No results found. The project successfully fostered climate change adaptation informed planning and budgeting in the agriculture sectors in the 11 target countries. This was achieved by strengthening the capacities of around 5 200 national and sectoral decision makers, representing over 120 institutions across the target countries, in identifying and appraising adaptation options, using tools such as multicriteria assessment, Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA), impact evaluation, and vulnerability and risk assessment, to facilitate evidence based decision making in their National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) process. Strategic capacities to advance adaptation planning and implementation were also reinforced, including on gender mainstreaming, climate finance, mobilization, and monitoring and evaluation of adaptation. In this context, a significant number of guidance materials were developed for policy makers and practitioners, related to different aspects of adaptation planning in agriculture. The project also helped countries to create collaborations with ongoing projects, and unlock innovative sources of climate finance that could support adaptation in their agriculture sectors. In addition, many partnerships and alliances were built with global research organizations, regional expert centres, national universities and civil society organizations. -
ProjectSupport the Development of Modern Business Cooperatives for Small Farmers - TCP/VIE/3702 2022

No results found.Agriculture plays a key part in Viet Nam's economy, accounting for approximately 14 percent of the country's GDP The majority of the population lives in rural areas, with agriculture, including forestry and fisheries accounting for 44 percent of all livelihoods Although land consolidation policies have begun to take effect, the agriculture sector of the country remains characterized by a fragmented production and small farms The sector has become less appealing to rural youth, who prefer to pursue higher salaries in cities, where employment opportunities and living conditions are better Smallholder farmers suffer from little investment in the sector and experience challenges, such as limited access to agricultural knowledge and labour shortages Regretfully, prior national programmes focused mostly on production technique adoption, with little emphasis on entrepreneurship or linking producers with market outlets.
