Synopsis (short abstract) In 1990, fuelwood accounted for some 80% of total energy consumption in Myanmar, equivalent to about 20,000 tons. Since then, the consumption of fuelwood has increased, and this trend is likely to continue in the coming years. Though the country is known for its vast forest resources, in populated areas scarcities of fuelwood are severe and basic fuel needs are not satisfied, particularly in the Dry Zone. The flow and trade of woodfuels in the country may be a key element of balancing supply and demand. The workshop, organized by the Forest Department, brought together more than hundred representatives from different forestry organisations in Myanmar. They reviewed the present system of woodfuel production, distribution and marketing in Myanmar, and exchanged information and experiences. The report contains several papers on woodfuel studies and activities, and it gives recommendations on appropriate policies and strategies to improve the woodfuel situation in the country. The rep ort will be of interest not only to the many staff involved in Myanmar itself, but also to experts in other RWEDP member-countries. The workshop was a follow-up of the regional course on trade in woodfuel related products held in 1995.

    The primary objective of this national workshop on woodfuel trade was to provide a forum where the participants could discuss various issues related to wood energy production, distribution and trade, and develop their understanding of the intricacies of woodfuel flow systems. The workshop participants consisted of 24 professionals representing governmental, non-governmental and academic institutions. Relevant technical papers and specific case studies were presented. This report presents the pro ceedings of the workshop and includes the papers presented and the workshop recommendations.

    Among the old concepts related with wood energy that time and time again turn up are that something is wrong with wood energy, that woodfuel is becoming increasingly scarce, and that wood energy threatens our soils and forests. The National Workshop at the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow, made serious attempts to put these issues and others into perspective and to draw sensible conclusions from the information at hand. The discussions of the workshop participants led t o a number of valuable recommendations for those concerned with woodfuel production and marketing in India. This report on Woodfuel Production and Marketing may be of use to all professionals interested in wood energy development in India.

    Biomass fuels play an important role in the energy balance of Pakistan. They meet over 45% of the energy demand, of which the share of woodfuel alone is about 25%. Information on the supply side of woodfuels is quite striking. As much as 90% of the woodfuels is being supplied from non-forest land of different types which are under private, community or government ownership and/or management. The present publication on Woodfuel Production and Marketing in Pakistan reports on the national wor kshop in Punjab which was coordinated by RWEDP. Two institutions, the Punjab Forestry Research Institute (PFRI) and the Marketing Division (MD), University of Agriculture (UA), have collaborated in hosting the national workshop in Faisalabad, in October 1997. Important issues related to woodfuel production and marketing were discussed by the experts from agencies of the government and selected NGO's. The workshop has recommended a number of actions which will further strengthen the wood energy s ector.
