This terminal evaluation covers the project "Mainstreaming ecosystem-based approaches to climate-resilient rural livelihoods in vulnerable rural areas through the farmer field school (FFS) methodology", funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The overall performance of the project is moderately satisfactory. The project is relevant in its response to climate change adaptation needs in Senegal. It is coherent in its design and is in phase with the Plan Senegal Emergent (PSE). The evaluation found that the project has contributed to capacity building of institutional actors and farmers organizations on climate change adaptation, resilience and gender equity. Notable results include: capacity building of technicians, relay producers, farmers and agro-pastoralists on good practices of adaptation to climate change, through the field-school approach; the establishment of a climate resilience fund that has allowed to finance micro-projects in rural area; the dissemination of agro-climatic information; trainings on adapted climate change practices at the farmfer field school (FFS) and agropastoral field school (APFS) level.

RuLIS is a tool to support policies for reducing rural poverty, jointly developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Statistics Division, the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). RuLIS brings together harmonized indicators and comparable data across countries and over time on rural incomes, livelihoods and rural development. Using the surveys that are processed as part of the RuLIS database project, this brief explores patterns and trends in rural employment for women and youth with a focus on agriculture in 16 low-income and lower-middle-income countries around the world: 11 from sub-Saharan Africa, two from East Asia and the Pacific, two from Latin America and the Caribbean, and one from Central Asia.

Rural Social Protection - Promoting resilient livelihoods and the economic potential of the rural poor and vulnerable 2019

Three-quarters of the world’s poorest and most undernourished people live in rural areas. They are predominantly family farmers (including youth, fishers and foresters) with few to no assets, engaged in low-quality, low-paid labour, dependent on agriculture and natural resources for their livelihoods. They struggle to access social and financial services, infrastructure, markets or innovative technologies and practices, preventing advancement to more efficient, sustainable and productive livelihoods. They are particularly vulnerable to economic, climatic and conflict-related risks and shocks. Such shocks can have devastating impacts on income and livelihoods, and push people into negative coping strategies, such as the sale of productive assets, over-deforestation or cutting the quality of children’s diets, exacerbating the cycle of food insecurity and poverty. Women and girls face extra challenges due to gender-related inequalities. FAO is working to support governments and key stakeholders in expanding basic social-protection coverage to protect the world’s poorest and most marginalized. Access to social protection has not only been proven to keep people from hunger and extreme poverty, but can also enhance their livelihood options, most of which are agriculture-related.
