    Rural women, who make up a significant proportion of the world's poorest, face compounded challenges due to gender-based discrimination. Particularly, in Africa and Asia, women disproportionately bear the burden of food insecurity and have limited access to resources, services and opportunities, a situation further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prioritizing gender equality in agriculture is essential to effectively address these challenges. Key barriers are faced by rural women at various levels, including the policy, institutional and community levels. Additionally, socio-cultural norms perpetuate gender inequalities by restricting women's mobility and economic opportunities. Recognizing the need to challenge these norms and address the barriers to unleash the economic potential of rural women, the subprogramme focused on expanding women’s socio-economic opportunities by combining gender responsive and transformative interventions in four countries that exhibit pronounced gender inequalities in agriculture: Cambodia, Kenya, Senegal and Uganda. In addition, the gender transformative approach of the Dimitra Clubs (DCs) was integrated in 62 projects of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in ten additional Least Developed Countries.

    Despite years of progress and global commitments, gender disparities and discrimination in food security persist around the world, particularly affecting women and girls in vulnerable situations. To address these issues, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) included the development of a set of Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in the context of Food Security and Nutrition in its 2020–2023 Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPoW). The Guidelines, which were prepared under this project, aimed to (i) support CFS Member States, development partners and other stakeholders to advance the rights of women and girls, as well as gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment (GEWGE) in their efforts to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; and (ii) to provide guidance to countries as they work to contribute to the achievement of CFS’s vision and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger) and 5 (Gender Equality).

    This document presents in detail the rationale and analysise of current general context in Papua New Guinea that based on, the FAO-led EU-STREIT PNG Programme developd its the Gender and Youth Inclusion Strategy. The document also explians the porpuse, goals, target groups and programmetic approach adopted by this FAO-led Programme in Ppaua New Guinea to assess and examine the women and youth situations, involvment and restrictions along all nodes of three cocoa, vanilla and fisheries vlaue chains in the country. It also presenst the Programme's recommendations on how to 1) mainstream gender perspective as detrimants of quality, 2) confront gender differences in labour dynamics, 3) improve gender sensitivity of key support services, and 4) address systemic barriers affecting value chain performances. This Publications also shares in details the crafted acion plan to progress towards the mentioned goals.
