Synopsis (short abstract) Since 2017, the Sudanese Wildlife administration has been working closely with local communities and the RESSOURCE Project to conserve the incredible wetlands in the Khor Abu Habil Inner Delta. This collaboration is bearing fruit. On 10 April 2022 the site was designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Ramsar designation can help strengthen protection and management of a site, and open the door to scientific studies, funding opportunities, tourism, and poverty alleviation initiatives. The RESSOURCE Project played a key role in this designation, supporting national bird counts, undertaking socio-economic surveys, and organizing the participatory consultation process to define the Ramsar site boundaries. The RESOURCE Project, which stands for "Strengthening Expertise in South Sahara on Birds and their Rational Use for Communities and their Environment", aims to improve the sustainable use of natural resources, particularly waterbirds. This Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations-led initiative is working at wetland sites in Chad, Egypt, Mali, Senegal and Sudan. The RESSOURCE Project is part of the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme, an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Paci¬c States, funded by the European Union and cofinanced by the French Facility for Global Environment and the French Development Agency.

    La protection et la restauration des écosystèmes de mangroves constituent une préoccupation majeure et permanente à travers le monde. La faiblesse des administrations locales et des niveaux de revenus des populations riveraines, accélèrent la dégradation de ces écosystèmes. Les espèces de bois généralement utilisés dans ces écosystèmes de mangroves permettent de satisfaire les besoins des populations locales. Par ailleurs, les espèces prioritaires pour satisfaire ces besoins des populations locales sont peu connues de même que les estimations des quantités actuelles et les projections des quantités futures. L’objectif a été d’évaluer la diversité des espèces de bois et les besoins de consommation du bois de service, d’œuvre et énergie au niveau des zones de mangroves des sites RAMSAR 1017 et 1018 afin de proposer des stratégies d’approvisionnement en bois et de gestion durable des mangroves.

    Evaluation of the site selected, design of project and proposed construction and operations of the Majuikan Tanjong Tualang Freshwater Aquaculture Centre, Malaysia 1980

    The Lembaga Kamajuan Ikan Malaysia (MAJUIKAN) proposed to establish a Freshwater Aquaculture Centre at Tanjong Tualang, Perak, Malaysia. The Centre is planned primarily to undertake aquaculture operation on a commercial scale. In conjunction with the Fisheries Department, Majuikan has identified three sites in the State of Perak for the project. The site at Tanjong Tualang was finally selected. This report presents the comments, suggestions and recommendations on the design for the proposed si te as made by Wan Mohamed and Khoo SDN BHD, the consulting engineers, to the Government of Malaysia as submitted to the Majuikan in March 1979 (Annex B). This task was made upon the request of the Government. On 1 August, the authors visited the Tanjong Tualang site with Mr. Toran Bin Ishak, State Majuikan Officer, Ipoh, and Mr. Thani, Majuikan official, Kuala Lumpur. The discussions were made at Majuikan office on 2 August 1979 in the presence of Mr. Sabri bin Ahmad, Director for Project Deve lopment of Majuikan, Mr. Bala Rajantharen, also for all of Majuikan, Mr. Chou Choong Keow, Director Mr. R. Santhanaraj, Associate Director of Wan Mohamed & Khoo SDN BHD.
