Supporting Human and Institutional Capacity Development in Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests - GCP/GLO/501/GER 2019

The livelihoods of many, particularly the rural poor, are based on secure and equitable access to and control over land, fisheries and forests. Governance of tenure is a crucial element in determining if and how people, communities and others are able to acquire rights to use and control land and other natural resources. Compliance with the principles and good practices set out in the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) will help to promote sustainable social and economic development that can help eradicate poverty and food insecurity. In line with this approach, the Government of Germany-funded project, which was part of a wider FAO multidonor-funded umbrella programme to support the implementation of the VGGT globally, supported the delivery of a series of Learning Programmes specific to the VGGT and targeted country actors engaged in different aspects of the VGGT: i) VGGT fundamentals: Implementing responsible governance of tenure; ii) Governing land for women and men; and iii) Safeguarding land tenure rights in the context of agricultural investments –FPIC.

Enhancing Capacity of Developing and Transition Economy Countries to Engage in Codex - GCP/GLO/893/MUL 2023
    Also available in:

Over the last century, the amount of food traded internationally has grown significantly, and a quantity and variety of food never before possible travels the globe today. This development offers both trade and health related opportunities and challenges for developing and transition economy countries. Many of these countries have a particular interest and comparative advantage in exporting both processed and unprocessed food products, but in order to be competitive in world markets they need to comply with international food safety standards, and to be able to guarantee the safety and quality of the food products they sell. Codex standards are developed to address these health and trade concerns. An increasing number of developing and transition economy countries are taking an active part in the Codex process, as they recognize the benefits of internationally recognized food safety and quality standards. However, the capacity to participate in Codex standard setting activities is still low or ad hoc in many of these countries. This project, which is part of a larger, umbrella FAO/World Health Organization (WHO) Codex trust fund project, aimed to increase the capacity of developing and transition economy countries to sustainably engage in Codex activities.

Enhancing Capacities and Sharing Knowledge of Developing Countries on Agricultural Solutions to Address Climate Change - GCP/GLO/992/JPN 2023

IPCC Sixth Assessment Reports (AR6) emphasizes that minimizing trade-offs with respect to climate actions in AFOLU sector requires integrated approaches to meet multiple objectives including food security, and provides win-win options that can contribute to both enhanced productivity and climate benefits. Recognizing the valuable contributions of the agriculture sector to achieving emission reductions in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), many countries in Asia and Pacific included one or more actions in the agriculture sector in their latest NDCs. The Global Methane Pledge, launched at 26th Conference of the Parties (2021) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and joined by 150 countries, including countries in the Asian region, represents a global momentum for further collective actions for methane emissions reductions, including those from agriculture. The present project responded to the need to improve sustainable development and food security through enhanced country capacity to implement adaptation and mitigation actions across agricultural sectors.
