    The Gambia is a low-income, food-deficient country characterized by high levels of food insecurity and high rates of malnutrition, which primarily affect the poor population in both rural and urban areas, particularly women and children. The problem of malnutrition is caused by many different factors, including limited access to food, and it results in inadequate and unbalanced diets. Increasing poverty and the socioeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated the situation, and the high cost of food has led to a reduction in the variety and quantity of food consumed, resulting in a sharp increase in diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In addition, urbanization and associated dietary changes have shifted the population away from the consumption of nutrient-rich traditional indigenous foods towards the consumption of more highly processed imported foods. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is also increasingly drawing attention to the importance of promoting indigenous, locally available foods to prolong and improve the quality of life.
