    The policy brief is a reflection upon key take home messages from the constellation of thinking and events in 2021 through a lens of science, practice, and policy with concrete examples from countries participating the Resilient Food Systems Programme. These include; the UN Food Systems Summit; updated evidence and deeper commitments to addressing climate change through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC Climate Change 2021) and the 26th Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change; and opportunities to intensify efforts on biodiversity and restoring land health included in the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UN CBD).

    The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has established a Drought Initiative, under which the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has initiated a comprehensive program to address various aspects of drought and aid countries in their preparedness efforts. The program adopts a stepwise approach to address the policy dimension of integrated drought management and strengthen strategic drought preparedness at the country and regional levels, in line with the most renowned and innovative adopted approaches. The steps include a multi-criteria assessment of national drought plans, guidance for policy alignment, and case studies for peer-to-peer learning.

    The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.

    FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022
    The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

    The Status of Youth in Agrifood Systems

    Young people stand at the heart of a rapidly changing world. They have the vision, energy and entrepreneurial spirit to find new and innovative ways to cultivate, create, package and transport the food we all need. If adequately nourished, educated, equipped with resources and involved in decision-making, young people can drive economic transformation and global prosperity. This brief presents the key messages and findings from the FAO report The Status of Youth in Agrifood Systems – the most comprehensive evidence-based analysis of youth engagement in agrifood systems to date. It highlights both the opportunities available to young people and the structural barriers they face, offering actionable recommendations for policymakers and development actors. The aim is to support more equitable and sustainable agrifood systems, where rural youth are not only beneficiaries but also drivers of change.
