    Climate change is one of the biggest challenges the world must meet today and in the future. Prolonged droughts and desertification are among the issues faced by many countries, especially in Africa and Asia, where the rural poor and smallholders are most heavily affected. If people are to survive in these ever harsher conditions, their crops need to withstand drought, high temperatures and poor soils. Cactus crops are gaining increasing interest across the globe, in particular cactus pear (Opun tia ficus− indica), because of its unique characteristics which provide resilience to the above mentioned harsh conditions. Cactus pear is able to grow on land where no other crops are able to grow; it can be used to restore degraded land and in many countries, such as Ethiopia, it is the only crop that can be relied on when everything else fails. The crop originates in Mexico – still the largest producing and consuming country in the world – but other countries, including Morocco, Ethiopia, Sou th Africa, Kenya, India and Pakistan, are increasing their production and use.

    Les cultures de cactus bénéficient d’une attention croissante à travers le globe, en particulier le figuier de Barbarie (Opuntia ficus-indica), grâce à leurs caractéristiques uniques leurs conférant de la résilience aux conditions extrêmes mentionnées ci-dessus. Le figuier de barbarie est capable de pousser sur des terres où aucune autre culture n’est capable de croître ; il peut être utilisé pour restaurer des sols dégradés et constitue dans de nombreux pays, comme l’Ethiopie, l’unique culture sur laquelle on peut compter lorsque toutes les autres sont vouées à l’échec. Cette culture vient du Mexique - aujourd’hui encore le plus grand producteur et consommateur dans le monde - mais d’autres pays, dont le Maroc, l’Ethiopie, l’Afrique du Sud, le Kenya, l’Inde et le Pakistan, en augmentent la production et en diversifient les utilisations. La première édition de ce livre, Agroecology, cultivation and uses of cactus pear, a été publiée en 1995. Durant les 20 dernières années les connaissances sur le figuier de barbarie se sont développées et cela est reflété par cette édition 2017 largement révisée.

    Agricultural cooperatives, responsible sourcing and risk-based due diligence 2022

    The objective of this technical paper is to consider how agricultural cooperatives in developing and transitional economies can help reduce adverse environmental, social and development impacts in global agricultural value chains (GVCs), including through risk-based due diligence. As an increasing number of governments begin to advance new or more stringent corporate sustainability and due diligence regulations, this paper assesses how agricultural cooperatives in developing contexts can adapt their training and extension services to help members, including smallholder farmers, meet the changing market needs on responsible agricultural production and sourcing. By implementing key recommendations from the OECD-FAO Guidance for Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains and it’s five-step framework for risk-based due diligence, cooperatives can demonstrate their compliance with government-backed standards on responsible business conduct (RBC) and increase their competitiveness as a responsible supplier in GVCs. For downstream companies, this brief highlights the risks, challenges and opportunities smallholder producers and their cooperatives may face to meet buyer food quality, safety and sustainable production requirements. Further, governments and other actors, such as non-governmental organizations, may find this paper useful in considering how agricultural trade and development policies can better support cooperatives in meeting downstream responsible sourcing requirements.

    End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition are at the heart of the sustainable development goals. The World has committed to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2030. But climate change is undermining the livelihoods and food security of the rural poor, who constitute almost 80 percent of the world’s poor. The effects of climate change on our ecosystems are already severe and widespread. Climate change brings a cascade of impacts from agroecosystems to livelihoods. Climate change impacts directly agroecosystems, which in turn has a potential impact on agricultural production, which drives economic and social impacts, which impact livelihoods. In other words, impacts translate from climate to the environment, to the productive sphere, to economic and social dimensions. Therefore, ensuring food security in the face of climate change is among the most daunting challenges facing humankind. Action is urgently needed now to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of food systems to ensure food security and good nutrition for all.
