No results found. This document contains the report of the ninth meeting of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) Working Group on Fisheries Management (WGFM) which was held in Kuwait City, State of Kuwait, from 24 to 26 November 2015. The WGFM took note of the outcomes of the eighth session of RECOFI (Muscat, Oman, 12 to 14 May 2015), including that the Commission noted that none of the priority activities of the WGFM had taken place, and that the Commission had reduced the activities of the current int ersessional period to only one activity: the joint appraisal of the Kingfish stock in the RECOFI area. Delegates provided updates on ongoing and current work on RECOFI priority species, recognizing the importance in ensuring that the knowledge base of RECOFI is preserved and to reduce fragmented studies being conducted by individual RECOFI member countries. It was proposed that two species be added to the list of RECOFI priority species. It was regarded as important to hold the Kingfish stock as sessment workshop in the first half of 2016. The WGFM agreed that the continuation of this socio-economic work is appreciated as a key activity in the intersessional period, noting the important role of the Task Group. It was re-highlighted that the data reported under Recommendation RECOFI/6/2011/1 would provide an adequate basis for monitoring the status of fishing operations and resources and taking management decisions. The meeting reviewed the standard classifications and terminologies and agreed on a set of RECOFI standards to cover the minimum data reporting component. The WGFM agreed to move toward one integrated formal RECOFI website for the integration of the current RECOFI regional data set and that Kuwait and FAO would further clarify and detail the tasks, activities and budget required in the transitional period and integrate them into a FAO/Kuwait cooperation agreement. It was agreed that there could be areas for cooperation between RECOFI and ROPME to the benefit of both regional organization and their members. The State of Qatar confirmed that it would host the tenth meeting of the Working Group on Fisheries Management in 2016. -

The WGA reviewed the outcome and recommendations of the eighth session of the Commission, ninth session of COFI Sub-Committee on Aquaculture; and thirty-third session of the FAO Regional Conference for the Near East. The WGA noted that a major intersessional activity was the Regional Workshop on Building National Capacity for Cultured Animal Disease Diagnostic in Relation to Bio-Security. It was highlighted that the workshop, which was originally scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia, was held in Cairo, Egypt, from 6 to 8 March 2018, for organizational reasons. A brief status review of aquaculture developments in participating member countries was done. Among the main priorities identified for the region, the WGA agreed on the importance of: (i) sharing work experiences on aquaculture spatial planning and discuss criteria and indicators to be used for fish cage culture site selection; (ii) adopting the proposed FAO-FIAS roadmap for the implementation of RECOFI recommendations on minimum data reporting on aquaculture; and (iii) revising and update the contents of the Regional Aquaculture Information System (RAIS). The WGA agreed on a programme of work for the intersessional period 2018-2020 -
Book (series)Report of the Twelfth Meeting of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) Working Group on Fisheries Management
Virtual meeting, 4-5 October 2021
2023Also available in:
No results found. The twelfth meeting of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) Working Group on Fisheries Management (WGFM) was held virtually, from 4 to 5 October 2021. The meeting was convened by RECOFI and FAO and attended by 36 participants from the following seven RECOFI member countries: Iraq, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates in addition to the FAO Secretariat. Bahrain did not attend. The meeting agreed with the recommendations from the workshop on Minimum Data Reporting (MDR) in July and noted that in terms of reviewing and reassessing the current MDR indicators, information could be collected using the previously noted tables on current work on RECOFI priority species, in particular the information regarding management measures and targeted fisheries. The WGFM noted the importance of having a variety of expertise providing input to FIRMS; it was acknowledged that while the Focal Point may not be an expert in all areas, they should consult with colleagues with relevant expertise as needed. Additionally, the meeting recognized it could be useful for the Focal Point and Alternate Focal Point to have complementary expertise to facilitate all the needed information. The meeting noted the challenge of reporting a stock as national or shared, due to it not being known definitively for each species. This has resulted in some inconsistencies in reporting across RECOFI countries on both RECOFI Priority Species as well as other species commonly reported by RECOFI member countries on the SDG 14.4.1 questionnaire. The meeting noted that RECOFI could play a role by working with member countries to jointly develop and complete a table on certain stocks which would assist member Countries in filling out the SDG 14.4.1 questionnaire. The WGFM is proposing a template which, once adopted by the Commission, will be used by the Secretariat to fill out according to the data already submitted by four RECOFI Countries which submitted their SDG14.4.1 questionnaire as part of the first inquiry launched by FAO in November 2019. The completed table would then be recirculated to RECOFI member countries in the endeavour to facilitate consistency in reporting when completing future versions of the SDG 14.4.1 Questionnaire. Countries which have not yet reported on the SDG14.4.1 questionnaire will be invited to provide inputs to that table. The WGFM acknowledged the recommendations of the workshop and reaffirmed the request to receive the SDG 14.4.1 questionnaire in Arabic.
