Synopsis (short abstract) The aim of this report is to define the strategy for the Science and Policy Interface under Component 1 of the Resilient Food Systems Programme (RFS) Hub. Under this component, FAO and UN-Environment Programme, in partnership with RFS country projects and a range of other actors and platforms and institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, aim to address institutional and policy barriers to inclusion of ecosystem services-aware approaches into policies and investments for improved and sustainable smallholder agriculture and natural resources. The focus of this component is the facilitation of dialogue, models, policies, and institutions that bridge the agricultural and environmental agendas and constituencies, at various scales.

    The global landscape study on ‘Green finance as a critical lever for delivering sustainable agrifood system’ is an inclusive commentary on the current status of green finance to agrifood sector in the global south and its support system. This document provides evidence that the current green finance trends favour the development of the clean energy industry, whereas smallholder agriculture has not had the same success. Financing the agrifood sector in a “business as usual” mode is not a sufficient condition to mitigate the risks emanated from a range of climatic shocks and unprecedented events impacting the global food value chains. Sustainable financing mechanisms through innovative instruments and business practices are potential solutions and green finance emerges as the way forward to shift the focus from economic profit creation to the generation of stakeholder’s value (economic, environmental, and social governance). The document presents an excellent opportunity that can help elicit ongoing initiatives, application mechanisms, and significant issues to build global narratives about developing an inclusive approach to green finance services for the agrifood sector.

    The Caribbean Strategy for Climate-Resilient Forests and Rural Livelihoods matches prioritised forestry initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling with suitable funding streams. It also identifies possible regional and national partners for project development and execution. While the strategy is focused on forest resources management, it also emphasises poverty alleviation and food security in line with FAO’s Strategic Objectives. The strategy also has a gender and youth focus in addition to an emphasis on ecosystem services to support agricultural systems. Overall, the strategy can be thought of as a roadmap to mobilise investment for specific priority initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling of climate resilience actions in the Caribbean forestry sector.
