    The FAO-implemented and Republic of Korea-funded Action to support implementation of Codex AMR Texts (ACT) project is supporting six countries to improve awareness, good practices, governance and surveillance of foodborne antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This story describes the training and support offered by the ACT project to its four implementing countries in Asia: Cambodia, Mongolia, Nepal and Pakistan, to participate in proficiency testing at a FAO Reference Centre for AMR at the Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (CU VET) in Bangkok, Thailand.

    The FAO Progressive Management Pathway for Antimicrobial Resistance (FAO-PMP-AMR) is a tool designed by FAO to support countries in developing, revising, and implementing the food and agriculture components of National Action Plans on AMR (AMR-NAPs). FAO-PMP-AMR plays a critical role in empowering the food and agriculture sectors to implement AMR-NAPs, enabling a One Health approach at the national level. The FAO-PMP-AMR covers 41 topics for comprehensive assessment of AMR-NAPs, and for each topic, it proposes four steps of activities and key performance indicators to achieve sustainable status with a step-by-step approach. FAO-PMP-AMR can be applied at any stage of AMR-NAPs throughout their development, implementation, and revision, by assisting countries in monitoring progress, identifying gaps between planning and implementation, and generating priority activities and relevant technical resources to improve specific areas towards higher levels of implementation.The PMP-AMR manual comprises three main parts:1. Essentials: Introduces the rationale of the PMP-AMR approach and its target audience.2. Details: Provides a detailed description of the pathways under each topic.3. Self-Assessment Process: Walks through how to apply the self-assessment process using PMP-AMR, including the organization of assessment workshops.

    FAO plays a key role in addressing AMR and the use of antimicrobials within the context of sustainable agrifood systems transformation. This includes animal production, animal health and welfare, aquaculture, marine resources, plant production and protection, biodiversity and restoration of nature, forestry, food safety, land, water and soil management. With national offices in over 130 countries, five regional offices and its headquarters, FAO supports countries to detect, prevent and contain AMR in line with its action plan on AMR. Launched in 2024, the 10-year flagship initiative Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation (RENOFARM) as well as the International FAO Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (InFARM), a global platform for harmonized farm-level AMR and antimicrobial use (AMU) data, are key mechanisms to achieving FAO’s commitment to reduce the need for antimicrobial use in agrifood systems by 2030. FAO has implemented AMR-related activities through over 62 projects, supporting over 70 countries to increase their capacity to address AMR through sustainable transformation of agrifood systems. This technical brief provides an overview of FAO’s work on AMR over the past two years (2023–2024) according to the FAO Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance 2021–2025.
