Strengthening Capacities for Nutrition-Sensitive Food Systems in Ghana, Kenya and Viet Nam - GCP/GLO/712/JPN 2022

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that work in food production, processing and retail play a key role in agrifood systems, especially in sub Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, where opportunities for commercialization are expanding. Indeed, agrifood SMEs can take advantage of these opportunities to compete and thrive in the market, while increasing local access to nutritionally dense foods and promoting healthy diets. This project was formulated to leverage the power of SMEs in three countries that have great potential for creating an enabling environment for developing nutrition sensitive food systems: Ghana, Kenya and Viet Nam. Through its multistakeholder approach, the project created synergies among the private sector, academia and civil society, which is critical to boosting in country capacities to support healthy diets.

Developing Capacities in Agricultural Innovation Systems (AIS) - GCP/GLO/017/EC 2025

Global agricultural output will need to increase significantly by 2050 to feed a projected global population of about 10 billion. Achieving this within a rapidly changing demographic, socioeconomic, environmental and climate context requires a climate-relevant, productive and sustainable transformation of agrifood systems. However, weak capacity to innovate in many countries is a real obstacle to this transformation. The Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP) was launched in 2012 to tackle the constraint of weak capacity for agricultural innovation in low- and middle-income countries in the tropics. To address this, TAP developed a common framework (CF) on capacity development for agricultural innovation systems and several tools, methodologies and guidelines for implementation at country level. From 2015 to 2019, the CF was piloted successfully in eight countries through a project funded by the European Commission. The current project built on the previous project with the aim of scaling up TAP and strengthening AIS that are inclusive, climate-responsive and capable of addressing systemic constraints in agriculture.

Advancing Agricultural Statistical Capacity Development across African Countries - MTF/GLO/431/BMG 2025

The Global Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) was developed in 2009 as a blueprint for a coordinated and long-term initiative to address the decline in the agricultural statistical systems of a number of developing countries. Phase II of the Global Strategy, which is the focus of the project, aimed to address the growing demand for robust agricultural and rural data by enhancing the capacity of national statistical systems. At its core, the project sought to provide African countries with the technical and organizational skills needed to produce and better present agricultural statistics essential for evidence-based policymaking, monitoring and planning. This effort was particularly critical given the challenges faced by low and middle-income countries, where resources and trained personnel are often insufficient to support data-driven agricultural and food security initiatives. GSARS II also played a crucial role in fostering South-South Cooperation and accelerating the implementation of the 50x2030 Initiative, contributing to long-term impact and sustainability.
