ProjectStrengthening Capacities for Nutrition-Sensitive Food Systems in Ghana, Kenya and Viet Nam - GCP/GLO/712/JPN 2022
Also available in:
No results found.Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that work in food production, processing and retail play a key role in agrifood systems, especially in sub Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, where opportunities for commercialization are expanding. Indeed, agrifood SMEs can take advantage of these opportunities to compete and thrive in the market, while increasing local access to nutritionally dense foods and promoting healthy diets. This project was formulated to leverage the power of SMEs in three countries that have great potential for creating an enabling environment for developing nutrition sensitive food systems: Ghana, Kenya and Viet Nam. Through its multistakeholder approach, the project created synergies among the private sector, academia and civil society, which is critical to boosting in country capacities to support healthy diets. -
ProjectStrengthening National Capacity in Agriculture Extension Services to Increase Production and Income of Farmers in Outer Atolls of Maldives - TCP/MDV/3802 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Agriculture has played a crucial role in the Maldives for generations. Although its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) is low, there is a significant number of farmers working in the country. Despite its importance, the agriculture sector is affected by several issues. The first is that land holding sizes decrease as the number of farmers increases. In addition, farmers are often unable to sell their products at competitive prices due to the absence of proper market structures and transportation difficulties, so they are forced to look for intermediaries to access markets, and ultimately have to sell their products at a lower-than-competitive price. Finally, a lack of trained field officers prevents the MoAAW from gathering vital data from farms to subsequently generate useful agricultural information and best practices for farmers. To support the rectification of these issues, this project aimed to: (i) train institutional field officers from different atolls to provide agricultural advice; (ii) create a mobile-compatible web application that enables interaction and information exchange between farmers and officers; (iii) improve the socioeconomic status of farmers; and (iv) generate employment opportunities through capacity-building programmes. -
ProjectStrengthen Capacities to Implement the Adaptive National Agriculture Policy Interventions - TCP/SRL/3804 2024
Also available in:
No results found. The agricultural sector in Sri Lanka experiences numerous challenges, including overreliance on food imports, insufficient investment, and external shocks from climate change and global trade trends. Moreover, improper crop production planning and agricultural management have led to both excess yields and deficits, destabilizing domestic food and nutrition security and affecting economic opportunities. To address these concerns, the Government of Sri Lanka drafted its comprehensive National Agricultural Policy in 2018, with the technical assistance of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under a previous project (TCP/SRL/3601/C1). However, due to consecutive changes in government structure, the policy has not been adequately integrated into annual National Agriculture Development Programmes, impeding national goals of becoming self sufficient and globally competitive. To achieve these objectives, the Ministry of Agriculture seeks to bridge the gap between policy formulation and implementation. In this regard, the Ministry requested technical assistance from FAO to build the capacities of government stakeholders to apply the strategies outlined in the country’s agricultural policies, focusing on bolstering local food production and enhancing market led enterprise development.
