Synopsis (short abstract) The Indian Council for Agricultural Research – Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened the Expert Workshop on Estimating Food Loss and Wasted Resources from Gillnet and Trammel Net Fishing Operations in Cochin, India, from 8 to 10 April 2015. Sixteen experts from 9 countries participated. FAO’s Fishing Operations and Technology Branch prepared a background paper and distributed it to workshop participants in advance of the meeting, providing a starting point for discussion during the workshop. This paper included as an appendix a draft data collection form for an assessment of food loss during gillnet and trammel net fishing operations. ICAR-CIFT conducted a trial of this draft methodology and produced a report providing recommendations for modifying the draft form. Working groups discussed this draft methodology for assessing food loss and wasted resources and the trial findings, and the outputs w ere presented during the plenary. The participating experts each provided 15-minute presentations on gillnet and trammel net fishing in their country, addressing: the main characteristics and extent of such fisheries in their country; catch quantities and composition; estimated quantities of resources lost, wasted or discarded in these fisheries; and causes of losses/waste and discarding. The case studies from different countries pointed out the occurrence of food loss from gillnet and trammel n et fisheries. However, there is a lack of information (qualitative and quantitative) on food loss and resources waste. Hence, it was decided to assess the level of food loss and resource wastage from such fisheries in selected countries on a pilot project basis, to analyse the findings, and to refine the methodology for assessment of the food loss and wasted resources from selected fisheries.

    This publication is based on an assessment of fish and fishing gear loss from selected gillnet and trammel net fisheries of India. It presents information on the types, causes and levels of losses, as well as technological, social, environmental and policy options to reduce losses from fishing and post-harvest operations. A secondary data review provided a preliminary understanding of fish and gear losses in India. Data from state governments, fishers cooperative societies, and community centres was used to address some knowledge gaps. Research teams undertook primary data collection in 12 locations, and 583 fishing vessels were surveyed. Respondents in group and key informant interviews included vessel captains, crew, fish vendors and auction agents. Women respondents were interviewed where available. The study found that gillnet fisheries were characterized by sizeable losses of both fish and gear, with a number of causes being highlighted. The combined loss of fish and nets amounted to almost one third of a motorized vessel owner’s income, and was significantly higher than the household’s expenditure on fishing, household maintenance, quality-of-life costs (healthcare, etc.), loan servicing, or leisure activities. Conclusions seek to locate the fish and gear losses in the wider fisheries and macroeconomic context, and emphasize the need to address them as part of broader and holistic development and management agendas. This publication will be of interest to technical specialists and extension agents concerned with loss and waste prevention and reduction, and to those wishing to learn more about the topic and conduct similar research.

    This manual defines methods for estimating selectivity of gillnet and longline gears, with particular reference to the use of these gears in abundance surveys. The manual covers how gear design, the basic concepts of size selection and fish morphometric data might be used to model selectivity. Statistical estimation methods are described in detail, and examples given of their application in spreadsheets. The efficient use of these gears in abundance and research surveys is also discussed. Althou gh the manual concentrates on gillnets and longlines, the methods given are general enough to be relevant to any research involving gear selectivity.

    The ecological and socio-economic problems caused by abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) are increasingly of concern. Used primarily by coastal, artisanal, small-scale fisheries worldwide, marine gillnets and trammel nets, which have relatively high ghost fishing potential, account for about one-fifth of global marine fisheries landings. FAO and the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities, hosted by the United Nations Envi ronment Programme, as Secretariat for the Global Partnership on Marine Litter, commissioned this study to identify best practices to estimate ghost fishing mortality rates and levels, priority research needs, and the status of international monitoring and management of ALDFG and ghost fishing by marine gillnet and trammel net fisheries. Accurate estimates of total ghost fishing mortality levels can be made given quality data on the density of ALDFG retaining fishing efficiency, duration of ghost fishing efficiency, and total ghost fishing mortality level of a unit of effort of ALDFG over the full period that the derelict gear retains fishing efficiency. Recommendations to improve estimates of regional and global rates and levels of ghost fishing from ALDFG from marine gillnet and trammel net fisheries were made. An assessment was made and opportunities were identified to improve intergovernmental organizations’ data collection protocols and management measures to prevent and remediate ALDFG and ghost fishing by marine gillnets and trammel nets.
