    Women's contribution to community livelihoods and nutritional security in the small-scale fisheries sector in Madagascar 2025

    This document aims to shed light on the diverse contributions of women to small-scale fisheries, emphasizing their direct influence on the economic landscape, dietary diversity, nutritional intake, and household food security in Madagascar. It supports the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (hereafter referred to as the Small-Scale Fisheries Guidelines), to which Madagascar is a signatory , and which were adopted by the FAO Committee on Fisheries in 2014 (FAO, 2015). The analytical framework is based on the methodology outlined in the study Illuminating Hidden Harvests (IHH): The Contribution of Small-Scale Fisheries to Sustainable Development, developed collaboratively by FAO, Duke University, and the WorldFish Center. This initiative, which encompassed around 50 country case studies –including Madagascar – aims to generate and share new information on small-scale fisheries to guide policy decisions and practices (FAO et al., 2023 ; Basurto et al., 2025).By identifying constraints that limit women’s participation in small-scale fishery value chains, this document aims to provide recommendations and strategies to the Government to enhance women’s empowerment and resilience to economic challenges, shocks, and climate change impacts.

    In many countries of the Asia-Pacific region, peanut is an important cash as well as food crop and is grown in large acreage or in home gardens. This crop has the unique character of being a cash crop with high market value, requiring intensive labour and offers direct food value with minimum processing. It is also a product amenable for sale in small-scale food vending markets to generate cash income for women. Women’s role in the peanut sector contributes to household food security making it a good entry point to assess the role of women in the cash crop sector. The document presents the summaries of the papers and a synthesis of the discussion on gender roles in the production and consumption aspects in the peanut sector. The countries represented in the consultation were Bangladesh, Cambodia, China PR, India, Lao PDR, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam.

    The water recirculation techniques used for aquaculture is not only the way forward in countries where environmental conservation is highly emphasized; the technique is also used to secure a higher and more staple aquaculture production with less diseases and better ways to control the hatchery parameters that influence growth. The strong environmental restrictions to minimize pollution from hatcheries and aquaculture plants in Northern European countries have sparked a rapid technological devel opment of the recirculation technique. This promotes environmentally sustainable aquaculture and also implies that hatcheries no longer necessarily need to be placed in pristine areas near rivers. Now they can be built almost anywhere a much smaller source of clean germ free water is available. The guide is prepared to inspire and help aquaculture farmers to take up the recirculation technique in the future.
