    Aquaculture has grown significantly in recent decades as a source of food, enhanced nutrition, income and livelihoods. Given the increasing reliance upon aquaculture worldwide, significant efforts are required in order to ensure the sustainable development of the sector, in particular related production. In October 2017, the Ninth Session of the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI:AQ) recognized the growing global significance of sustainable aquaculture development and its potential contribution to global food security and nutrition, but also to the achievement of a number of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets. It further recognized the increasing need for implementation of best practices in aquaculture in a number of countries and regions and recommended the development by FAO of global Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA). These guidelines for policy-makers will aim to raise greater awareness within the aquaculture sector, and demonstrate alternative and integrated approaches, such as integrated fish and plant farming and climate-smart agriculture, in order to effectively participate in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The guidelines will be developed within the broader framework of FAO’s Common Vision for Sustainable Food and Agriculture and its five principles.

    Nutrition and food systems. A report by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition of the Committee on World Food Security. September 2017 2018
    At its 42nd session in October 2015, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) requested the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) to prepare a report on Nutrition and Food Systems, to be presented at CFS 44 in October 2017. This topic is highly relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the implementation of the 2014 Rome Declaration on Nutrition, the subsequent Decade of Action for Nutrition, and the fulfilment of the right to adequate food. The purpose of this report is two-fold: (i) to analyse how food systems influence people’s dietary patterns and nutritional outcomes; and (ii) to highlight effective policies and programmes that have the potential to shape food systems, contribute to improved nutrition and ensure that food is produced, distributed and consumed in a sustainable manner that protects the right to adequate food for all. This report is illustrated by short case studies reflecting the wide variety of practical experiences in diff erent contexts. It also provides a set of action-oriented recommendations addressed to states and other stakeholders in order to inform CFS engagement in advancing nutrition and CFS contribution to the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016–2025).

    Multi-stakeholder partnerships to finance and improve food security and nutrition in the framework of the 2030 Agenda

    The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda encouraged the use of multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) to complement the efforts of national governments and intergovernmental organizations in ending hunger and poverty and achieving sustainable development. In this context, MSPs are gaining traction, as a part of a new approach to governance, and as a topic for science. Yet, evidence and data are still limited and quickly evolving. Considering this increased importance of MPSs in the global arena, during its 43rd Plenary Session (17-21 October 2016), the CFS requested the HLPE to produce a report on “Multistakeholder Partnerships to Finance and Improve Food Security and Nutrition in the Framework of the 2030 Agenda” to be presented at CFS45 Plenary session in October 2018. This report highlights transparency and accountability as key conditions: to align MSPs’ work with the progressive realization of the right to adequate food; to better use existing resources for FSN and sustainable development; and even to potentially attract new resources. This report also suggests a set of criteria to enable governments and non-state actors to perform their own assessments of MSPs following a common methodology, as well as pathways to improve their contribution to financing and improving FSN.
