Synopsis (short abstract) The Third Session of the EIFAC Working Party on Stocking took place from 15 to 19 November 1993, Thonon, France. The Session was attended by 11 participants, of which 10 were from EIFAC member countries, and one participant from the Russian Federation. The Session finalized the draft manuscript of Guidelines on Stocking of Coregonids, which is produced as EIFAC Occasional Paper No. 28. An appraisal of the Questionnaire on objectives and effects of stocking practices have demonstrated the widespr ead importance of stocking as a fishery activity in EIFAC member countries, with a total of 32 species stocked in 15 countries.

The Eighth Session of the EIFAC Working Party on Eel took place from 24 to 29 May 1993, Olsztyn, Poland. The Session was attended by 42 participants, of which 37 from EIFAC member countries, and one participant each from Australia, Belarus, Canada, China and Morocco. Altogether, 34 papers were presented, and three posters exhibited. The papers were grouped under the following topic sessions: Larval and elver studies; Continental stages: growth; Continental stages: populations and fisheries; Cont inental stages: migration; Parasites and contamination; Eel culture; Co-operative studies; Eel recruitment and stocks. The Working Party expressed continued concern about the recruitment at the glass eel stage and the maintenance of stocks and fisheries and it put forward recommendations on how to arrest further deterioration of eel stocks.
