Synopsis (short abstract) The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2025–2034 presents a ten-year baseline scenario for global agricultural and fish markets, highlighting expected developments in consumption, production, trade and prices. Consumption of livestock and fish products is projected to rise, driven mainly by income and population growth in middle-income countries, while intake in low-income countries remains well below levels associated with the FAO Healthy Diet Basket. Global agricultural and fish production is anticipated to expand by 14 percent over the coming decade, mostly based on expected productivity improvements. However, this growth, combined with structural shifts towards greater animal production, is still projected to increase cropland areas, livestock herds and direct agricultural greenhouse gas emissions despite improvements in carbon intensity. International trade will remain essential for global food security, nutrition and livelihoods, as an estimated 22 percent of all calories will be traded internationally. Regional differences will persist: imports are projected to account for nearly 70 percent of domestic consumption in the Near East and North Africa, while the Latin America and Caribbean region is expected to export close to 60 percent of its agricultural output. Strengthening multilateral cooperation and preserving a rules-based agricultural trading system will be crucial for supporting market stability and enhancing sustainability.

    FAO regularly undertakes projections of production, demand and trade for all major agricultural commodities and for practically all countries in the world, as a basis for medium-term commodity policy analysis and for assessing future food security problems. These projections are important input for FAO’s commodity outlook work in general, for global perspective studies such as World Agriculture: Towards 2015/2030 and as background for policy consultations on individual commodities. Outside FAO, the projections are used by national planning agencies, international research institutions, project missions and other organizations and enterprises requiring a world frame of reference for national agricultural commodity policy and investment strategies. The unique feature of FAO projections is to provide details of production, consumption and trade for individual commodities and countries that are generally not available elsewhere.

    This country profile describes the state of the water resources and water use, as well as the state of agricultural water management in Papua New Guinea. The aim of this report is to describe the particularities of the country and the problems met in the development of the water resources, and irrigation in particular. Irrigation trends, existing policies and legislation to water use in agriculture, possible treaties and agreements between countries as well as prospects for water management in agriculture are presented, as described in literature. The AQUASTAT country profiles are based on the information available at the time they have been written or updated, generally every five to ten years. For the most recent reliable country data, reference is made to the AQUASTAT main database.
