ProjectFactsheetEx-Post Independent Evaluation of FAO’s Support to Integrated Dairy Scheme Development in Afghanistan - GCP/GLO/982/GER 2020
Also available in:
No results found.FAO has supported dairy development activities in Afghanistan since the late 1990s, with multiple examples of bilateral donor funding. Previous projects have focused on improving the production and productivity and linking producers to the national market through processing, value addition and diversification of milk and dairy products. Meanwhile, farmers have been supported to organize themselves into primary and secondary levels of cooperative societies (dairy unions), with a view to taking over the management of the dairy plant and feed mill enterprises. The ex-post evaluation proposed under the present project provides a unique opportunity to assess the longer-term impacts of applying the Integrated Dairy Scheme model, as well as providing lessons on its sustainability, adaptability and suitability for future interventions aimed at scaling up the model nationwide. -
DocumentFactsheetExploiting Dairy Production Potential in Sri Lanka - TCP SRL 3501 2018
Also available in:
No results found.Small-scale dairying plays a crucial role in the livelihoods and food security of many smallholders and rural communities in Sri Lanka. Dairy products are essential to providing low-cost and high quality protein, minerals and vitamins, and great potential exists for the development of the dairy industry. However, domestic production falls short of its potential and much of the demand for dairy products is met by importing milk powder. Dairy production costs are relatively low for farmers, but development of the industry is hindered by a shortage of steady supplies of feed. Therefore, this project aimed to increase milk production by improving feeding and management techniques and increasing the feed base. -
ProjectFactsheetStrengthening Dairy Development in Rwanda - UTF/RWA/042/RWA 2023
Also available in:
No results found.Livestock play a significant role in ensuring food security, nutrition, livelihoods and economic development. In Rwanda, livestock have the potential to contribute to the country's agricultural led growth and socioeconomic transformation. Livestock are particularly important for rural youth and women, providing them with opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. Although the dairy sector is rapidly growing and accounts for 10.5 percent of agricultural gross domestic product, it is underperforming compared to other countries in the region. Small scale dairy farmers in Rwanda face challenges related to capacity building, low productivity of dairy breeds, insufficient use of advanced farm technologies and practices and a lack of access to input and output markets. To address these issues, this project aimed to provide technical assistance for the Rwanda Dairy Development Project (RDDP) through collaborative efforts among the Government, the Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
