The livestock sector is one of the fastest-growing subsectors in agriculture. Its development has greatly contributed to economic growth and poverty reduction in Southeast Asia. At the same time, the unprecedented increase in emerging and re-emerging animal diseases has had a profound impact on animal productivity and production in the region and on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. This publication reports on the outcome of a conference on the environmental animal health management initi ative (EAHMI) for enhanced smallholder production in Southeast Asia convened in Makati City, Philippines from 18 to 19 September 2014. The conference included a plenary session, five technical sessions and a poster gallery exhibit to showcase best practices and lessons learned in use of environmental animal health management strategies in the region and the way forward.

    Seeds Toolkit - Module 3
    Seed quality assurance
    2018
    Also available in:

This toolkit – made available in English, French and Spanish – will be promoted as practical guidance to assist in the implementation of the national seed strategies. It will provide a number of practical capacity building tools for essential stages of the seed value chain and targeted primarily at seed sector practitioners who will participate in special training workshops to acquire pertinent technical knowledge and will be expected in return to create a multiplier effect through further follow-up FFS trainings down to the level of seed traders and farmers. In doing so, the toolkit will be used as guidance for conducting country-led workshops and other training activities aimed at strengthening quality seed delivery systems and seed regulatory mechanisms in selected countries. The development of capacity in the production of high quality seeds, the seed replacement rates, true seed cost and realistic seed pricing mechanisms as well as the role of different stakeholders are of critical importance in the process of the formulation of national seed policies, which is one of the core areas of FAO’s delivery at the national level.

Bringing climate change adaptation into farmer field schools
A global guidance note for facilitators
    2021
    Also available in:

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) developed this guidance note to assist FFS master trainers and facilitators bring about climate change adaptation in FFS. The guide provides key information on how the climate is changing, and how these changes are impacting the agricultural (crops and livestock), aquaculture and agroforestry systems of smallholder farmers. The note provides guidance to FFS practitioners so that they can better work with individual farmers and communities – using a “climate change lens” – in identifying, testing and adapting new practices that respond to changes and variability in local weather. The guide is not intended as a textbook on climate change but is prepared for easy understanding of basic concepts of climate change to support the interpretation of climate information in specific farming contexts and steps that FFS facilitators “must know” in starting FFS programmes that respond to climate change challenges.
