ProjectInnovative Evidence-Based Solutions and Investments in Agrifood Systems Transformation and Rural Development in Bhutan in the Context of Hand-in-Hand Initiative - TCP/BHU/3805 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Bhutan’s agrifood systems face multifaceted challenges given the country’s mountainous terrain and rugged topographic features. Less than 20 percent of arable land in Bhutan is irrigated and almost 30 percent of arable land is currently left fallow. Yields for almost all crops and livestock produce remain below regional averages and production for most crops has remained stable over the last two decades for such reasons as small landholdings, issues with inputs, little innovation or investment in research and development, low adoption of technology and growing environmental stress. Shifts in farm labour demographics (youth migration from rural to urban areas for employment and education) coupled with an ineffective extension service have further impacted on production, distribution and income generation from food products. Farming has also become more vulnerable as a result of climate change. Post-harvest loss remains high and agriprocessing infrastructure inadequate, while markets and standards continue to be weak. The prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition is relatively high. Diets, particularly in remote areas, remain poor. -
ProjectStrengthening Capacities of the Government of Andhra Pradesh to Support Farmers to Adopt Sustainable Agri-Food Systems - TCP/IND/3807 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about half the population in India, which is also one of the main producers of milk, legumes, jute, rice, wheat and cotton. Due to soil erosion, burning of crop residues and a high use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it is essential to transition to sustainability to increase agricultural productivity and enhance both food and ecological security in the country. Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh depends mostly on rainfall, so the monsoon and seasonal conditions play a crucial role and have been highly affected by climate change, leading the State of Andhra Pradesh, as many others in India, to experience soil degradation, yield reductions and seasonal yield gaps, which have increased the costs of production. Furthermore, other safety concerns such as the COVID 19 pandemic affected agricultural value chains, giving rise to the need to modernize the agricultural sector with technologies and marketing strategies that will lead to profitable and sustainable production systems. To address these challenges, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (state government) launched farmer facilitation centres (FFCs) as an efficient platform to disseminate knowledge and provide farmers with services and assistance to improve year-round productivity, profitability and sustainability. -
ProjectStrengthening Policy and Leadership Capacities for Transforming Agrifood Systems in the Nena Region - TCP/RAB/3805 2024
Also available in:
The Near East and North Africa (NENA) region has a crucial need for capacity development in leadership and decision-making in agriculture, food security and related areas. In order to ensure the state of the art knowledge and skills required, leadership in the region’s agriculture sector needed to be strengthened. Before the project, the sector’s leaders lacked real time information and analytical capacities, particularly in such specialized areas as climate change mitigation and adaptation for agriculture, water management, soil health, plant production and protection, livestock and fisheries management, and agribusiness. The overall aim of the project was to build capacities in these areas through specifically designed and tailored training for stakeholders at political, senior, middle and junior levels. It would do this in two ways. The first would involve the establishment of the FAO Regional Leadership Academy (RLA), a structure that would collaborate with important agriculture academic, training and research institutions across the NENA region.
