This document is the tenth edition of the World Statistical Compendium. The first issue was published in 1980 and substantially revised and updated in 1983, 1986, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2001. The present edition, prepared in response to the ever growing demand for coherent statistical data in the hides, skins and derived products sector, contains up-dated figures up to 2002. Country series have been revised in cases where new information has become available. An integrated approa ch used in the previous compendia has been adopted. The compendium contains results of statistical analysis of some 180 countries linking stages of processing from the raw hide to the finished product stage. The methodological approach adopted is described in more detail in the 1986 edition. The detailed statistical data on production, utilization and trade of hides and skins, leather and leather footwear are preceded by eleven summary tables and brief analytical notes highlighting the s alient features and changes which have taken place in the hides and skins and leather sector. Despite progress in enhancing the coherence and comparability of the data presented, shortcomings still exist. It is to be hoped that the work undertaken by the FAO Sub-Group on Hides and Skins will further advance progress in eliminating existing statistical deficiencies.

This statistics working paper presents an estimation methodology for decomposing food expenditure across the industries and the primary factors of the food value chain (FVC). The approach outlined is based on the Global Food Dollar methodology developed by the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-ERS) and Cornell University. FAO has enriched the analytical scope of the methodology by adding the industry and primary factors decomposition. Country coverage has also been increased by adapting the methodology to different data types and sources.

Trade is essential in agrifood systems, enabling the distribution of agricultural commodities worldwide. It enhances access to healthy and affordable food, playing a significant role in food security, nutrition and safety – a vital element for countries that cannot produce enough to meet their domestic demand. Trade impacts numerous economic and social factors, such as market dynamics, agricultural productivity and the diversity of its outputs, the assortment, and the quality and safety of food products, and ultimately, dietary composition. The FAOSTAT Trade data domain disseminates statistics on the international trade of food and agricultural products for the period of 1961–2023. The food and agricultural trade datasets are collected, processed and disseminated by FAO according to the standard international merchandise trade statistics methodology. This analytical brief looks at the overall trade of agricultural products, food excluding fish and the main commodity groups for the period 2010–2023.
