    The project ‘Empowering women in fisheries for sustainable food systems’ is being January 2020–December 2022, with the aim of supporting small-scale fishers, especially women, to increase their participation in the whole value chain thereby increasing their incomes from fishing, fish processing by using energy-saving or climate-smart technologies, and from trading. The project is being implemented in three districts in Malawi i.e. Karonga, Salima and Mangochi. The project objectives are: to raise awareness through knowledge products and outreach, among government and relevant stakeholders, of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines), their principles and provisions, and how to apply these; and also to empower stakeholders through capacity development and institutional strengthening. This project is funded by Norad and is being implemented by FAO and the Government of Malawi through the Ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources’ Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

    Mapping women’s small-scale fisheries organizations in Malawi
    Results from assessing current capacities, gaps and opportunities to strengthen women´s organizations in the sector

    Through the FAO-NORAD project, survey data was used to “map” women’s organizations and assess their present capacities and needs in the small-scale fisheries sector. Data collection for this study (herein referred to as the Women’s SSF Mapping Assessment) focused on three districts along Lake Malawi: Karonga in the Northern region, Salima in the Central region, and Mangochi in the Southern region. Across these three districts, a total of 54 surveys were collected between 18 September and 30 October 2020 (for a full overview of the study methods, see Appendix 1). The results of this study and related recommendations for capacity enhancement activities were later validated through a workshop held on 24 March 2021, by representatives from the central government (Ministry of Fisheries), academia, NGOs, district-level officials, extension officers, and women from the smallscale fisheries sector.

    In support of the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), conceptualized a project focused on promoting gender equality, capacity development throughout fish value chains, and improving nutrition and diets. This project, titled “Empowering women in small-scale fisheries for sustainable food systems”, promoted activities at national and local levels to support SSF women actors in the post-harvest segment in five sub-Saharan Africa countries: Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
