Price of maize remained steady in the capital, but slightly higher than last year. Food security remains generally stable, but localised production declines could affect areas in the south that experienced a dry-spell in early 2011. Despite stable supply to markets thanks to increased maize production, poorer people in southern districts face access difficulties. The Government supported an estimated 1.5 million households with input subsidies for the 2010/11 season, but consumers are af fected by re-imposition of import duties.

Rice prices have been rising in the last months but stabilized in January while wheat flour prices, although remained stable, were very high, mainly due to import dependence. Although food security has improved, poor groups particularly children suffer from high levels of malnutrition. Agencies are concerned over a serious food security situation. Over 1 million people were affected by floods earlier in the year in the east and central parts of the country. Flooding damaged also paddy crop i n the main (Maha) season, but rice output for 2011 was still good. Prices of imported rice and maize went up in recent months following international price increases while local rice and maize prices remained stable or declined. Food insecurity is persistent in many areas; different agencies reported a stressed to crisis level of food security and very high prevalence of undernourishment. Drought conditions during the reporting period have had negative effects on spring crops affecting several areas in the South-east, North, Northwest, and Northeast. No a gricultural support policies for the drought affected areas are reported.
