    This publication looks at the land governance situation in the Caribbean subregion. This working paper was done in light of FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land and other Natural Resources. Caribbean countries in general have key issues affecting land and natural resources tenure. This study identifies and assesses these issues and provides examples of good governance in the region.

    Land Tenure Working Paper 9. Based on international authoritative documents, this paper draws 14 principles to be taken into account when developing Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land and other Natural Resources. The paper sees Voluntary Guidelines as human-rights based documents that provide a framework and a point of reference for national and international policies. Voluntary guidelines are addressed to a wide range of stakeholders and therefore they need to be d erived from international agreements and credible examples of good practice if they are to command wide support.

    Land Tenure Working Paper 19. The present paper is written as part of the overall Voluntary Guidelines consultation and development process and is a contribution to the subsequent preparation of the Gender Technical Guide. It contextualises and defines gender for the Voluntary Guidelines, discusses what governance of tenure means from a gender perspective and identifies and analyses key issues and themes. It then summarises recommendations relevant to gender before drawing some conclusions for t he development process of the Voluntary Guidelines.

    Policy measures for micro, small and medium food processing enterprises in the Asian region 2015

    Small and medium food processing enterprises (SMEs) play an important economic role and are a major source of employment in both developing and advanced economies. In Asia and the Pacific, formal and informal SMEs account for over 97 percent of all enterprises, employ over half of the workforce and contribute significantly to economic growth. Micro, small and medium food processing enterprises (MSMFEs) constitute a major segment of this sector. This publication is the outcome of a regional works hop convened in December 2103 to promote agro-industrial policy measures for MSMFEs in Asia. It includes status reports from nine Asian countries – Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka and Thailand – and a review of the key issues and policy recommendations based on the findings and deliberations of the workshop.

    América Latina y el Caribe logró reducir en 20 millones el número de subalimentados con respecto el año 2000. Sin embargo, el 2018 marca el cuarto año consecutivo en el que el hambre muestra alzas continuas. • La inseguridad alimentaria moderada o grave en América Latina se incrementó de forma considerable. Este aumento produjo que más de 32 millones de personas se sumaran a los casi 155 millones que vivían en inseguridad alimentaria en la Región en 2014-2016. La Región ha mostrado progresos significativos en la reducción de la desnutrición infantil y, se encuentra sensiblemente alejada y por debajo de las prevalencias mundiales de desnutrición de niñas y niños. Sin embargo, la malnutrición por peso excesivo en la Región es de las más altas en el mundo y sigue incrementándose. Este año, el Panorama de la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional en América Latina y el Caribe se centra en los entornos alimentarios y describe algunas de las principales políticas que los países de América Latina y el Caribe están desarrollando en éstos para enfrentar las distintas formas de malnutrición.

    The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021

    In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
