Synopsis (short abstract) This paper presents a database of investment and capital in agriculture, an essential input for crosscountry macro analysis of the primary sector of the economy. Our work stems from the innovative research undertaken by Larson et al. (2000). With respect to these authors, we extend country coverage and time span. Further we introduce some refinements to the methodology used to construct the series of fixed capital stock by changing how the agricultural GDP and investment is forecasted. Finally we document in details our data sources and the STATA program used to implement all the methods.

    In this paper we present the new FAO analytical database on aggregate physical investmentflows and capital stock in agriculture, forestry and fishing for 206 countries and territories from 1990 to 2015. the methodology used to deal with missing data, and the measurement issues underlying its development. Building on previous research programmes held at the World Bank and at the FAO, we compile long time series of the agricultural investment-to-value added ratio, which we employ to compute agricultural investment flows.

    Investing in farmers – or agriculture human capital – is crucial to addressing challenges in our agri-food systems. A global study carried out by the FAO Investment Centre and the International Food Policy Research Institute, with support from the CGIAR Research Programme on Policies, Institutions and Markets and the FAO Research and Extension Unit, looks at agriculture human capital investments, from recent trends to promising initiatives in Cameroon, Chile, Côte d’Ivoire, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Peru, Rwanda and the United States of America. It also includes 11 shorter case studies, ranging from pastoralist training centres to the inclusion of indigenous communities. The global study aims to provide governments, international financing institutions, the private sector and other partners with the evidence and analysis needed to make more and better investments in agriculture human capital. This publication is part of the Directions in Investment series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

    The FAO Capital Stock Database reports on aggregate physical investment flows and capital stock in agriculture, forestry and fishing for 190 countries and territories from 1995 to 2020. Variables contained in the database are the Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF), the net (or wealth) capital stock (NCS) and the consumption of fixed capital (CFC), measured according to the methodological and computational concepts of the System of National Accounts (SNA) 2008. Whenever available, the database integrates official national accounts data harvested from UNSD or the OECD. The latest update presents data for the period 2000-2020.
