Synopsis (short abstract) In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly shook the aquatic products industry, impacting production, demand, and prices. The fisheries and aquaculture sectors faced challenges such as diminished demand from major buyers, disrupted sales of premium seafood, and hampered fish trade due to border closures. Prices plummeted by 20 to 30 percent in certain regions. To address such vulnerabilities, a study proposes policy objectives to bolster the sector's readiness for pandemics and unforeseen crises, incorporating insights from industry stakeholders. The "Fisheries & Aquaculture Sectoral Preparedness and Response to COVID-19" project in Türkiye strives to develop an emergency response plan, emphasizing improved adaptability and responsiveness to current and future disruptions. Deliverables include a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan and a strategic Seafood Market Expansion initiative. Furthermore, a subregional public awareness campaign under Output 2 targets students to aid in the recovery of the domestic market.

    This document is a follow-up study of the MedAquaMarket project in support to the activities of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) –Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ)– Working Group on Marketing on Aquaculture (WGMA). The MedAquaMarket project was funded by the Government of Spain (Secretaria General de Pesca, Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación). Based on fifteen national country reports and other relevant sources of information, it provides an overview of the status and trends of the marine aquaculture industry in the Mediterranean region and its markets.

    This publication includes the abstracts of the selected papers presented by experts on the occasion of the African Network on Fish Technology and Safety (ANFTS) 2021. The abstracts are subdivided according to the following themes: (a) Reduction and prevention of post-harvest losses by: (i) Improving methods, means and the political and institutional environment conducive to good practices for handling, preservation, processing and packaging of fishery products; (ii) Better utilizing low value fish, bycatch and discards; (iii) Developing by-products; (b) Improving fishery products safety by strengthening inspection and quality control services and systems, certification, eco-labelling, etc.; (c) Improving national, sub-regional marketing channels and international trade of fish and fishery products; (d) Socio-economics, gender and environmental issues related to post-harvest activities; and (e) Addressing the implications of COVID-19 on small-scale fishery value chains. Cette publication inclue les résumés des articles sélectionnés présentés par les experts à l’occasion de la réunion du Réseau africain sur la technologie et la sécurité sanitaire du poisson (ANFTS) en 2021. Les résumés sont sous-divisés selon les thèmes suivants: (a) réduction et la prévention des pertes après capture par: (i) l'amélioration des méthodes, des moyens et de l'environnement politique et institutionnel propice aux bonnes pratiques de manipulation, conservation, transformation et conditionnement des produits de la pêche; (ii) une meilleure utilisation des poissons de faible valeur, des prises accessoires et des rejets; (iii) la création de sous-produits; (b) l’amélioration de la sécurité sanitaire des produits de la pêche en renforçant les services et les systèmes d'inspection et de contrôle de la qualité, la certification, l'éco-étiquetage; (c) l’amélioration des circuits de commercialisation nationaux, sous-régionaux et du commerce international du poisson et des produits de la pêche; (d) les questions socioéconomiques relatives à la parité hommes-femmes et à l’environnement, liées aux activités après capture; (e) la prise en compte des implications de la covid-19 sur les chaînes de valeur de la pêche artisanale.

    Conscious of the data scarcity during the COVID-19 pandemic, FAO collaborated with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Liveable Future (CLF), within the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH), to document the impacts of, and responses to, the pandemic. To do so, it conducted a systematic literature review and implemented a survey with support from Globefish, Eurofish and the other Fish Info Networks, together with case studies of Eurofish Member States.This circular describes the findings from the FAO and CLF-supported surveys, and the literature review. The report was further enriched with a collection of work from large studies across the world.
