No results found.The primary objective of this study was to undertake a rapid inventory of the training facilities available for fisheries management, aquaculture, and post-harvest management in the Eastern and Southern Africa - Indian Ocean region (ESA-IO). On the basis of this inventory, the second objective was to identify specific training solutions relevant to the region, with potential support for their implementation from the SmartFish programme (FAO/COI/EU). The third objective was to provide institution s, the private sector and other projects in the region with comprehensive information about available training initiatives to boost national and intra-regional use of such facilities and capacities in the region. The study focused on six countries of the ESA-IO region: Madagascar, Reunion (France), Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. -

The Regional Workshop on Safety at Sea in Artisanal and Small-scale Fisheries in the South West Indian Ocean was held in Moroni, Union of the Comoros, from 12 to 14 December 2006. Forty-one experts from the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) region including an expert from Sweden and representatives of FAO participated. The workshop was organized and implemented by the Fishing Technology Service of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, in close collaboration with the FAO Subregiona l Office for Southern Africa. During the workshop, the results of the Study on safety at sea in artisanal and smallscale fisheries in the South West Indian Ocean, conducted in May 2006, were presented. In addition, seven experts from SWIOFC member States made presentations and took up matters affecting safety at sea in their countries. Experts from Grenada, Sweden and FAO made presentations on global and regional aspects of safety at sea that enriched the information provided to the delegates. The information presented was debated in four working groups on different themes covering fishing operations, data collection, legal framework and technology. -

No results found.The first Working Party on Fisheries Data and Statistics was organized by the Kenya Marine Fisheries Research Institute. It was attended by participants from Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania and Yemen. The Working Party received national reports of each of the countries and examined the status of fisheries catch and effort data and statistics. It discussed minimum data requirements for effective fisheries management in five generic fisheries types: industrial shrimp, artisanal shrimp, trap fisheries, demersal line and beach seine fisheries. A list of metadata fields was presented to assist member countries provide data to the regional data coordinator of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project in order to set up a regional meta-database. The availability of relevant regional and global information systems was discussed. The Working Party made recommendations on improving the situation o f fisheries data and statistics for the consideration of the Scientific Committee of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission.
