ProjectTechnical Support to Enhance Capacity for Technology Transfer and Extension to Increase Production and Income for Farmers/Rural Population - TCP/DRK/3802 2024
Also available in:
No results found. The agricultural and rural sectors, including livestock, forestry and fisheries, contribute roughly 20 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. These sectors have also been recognized for their potential to boost the country’s economic growth. Despite their importance, there are significant challenges to the expansion of the sectors, such as the country’s mountainous terrain, which means that arable land is limited; unfavourable natural and climatic conditions that affect production; hundreds of years of intensive farming practices that have led to the deterioration of land and soil; a lack of necessary technical equipment; and low mechanization levels. Because of these issues, the country cannot generate a food supply large enough to feed its population. -
ProjectEmergency Response to Mitigate the Impact of One-Health Related Threats on the Most Vulnerable Persons in Rural Areas in China - TCP/CPR/3801 2023
Also available in:
No results found. In December 2019, a highly infectious and deadly respiratory disease, later identified as COVID-19, emerged in Wuhan. The virus is a member of the coronavirus family, which can cause diseases in both animals and humans, and can be transmitted from animals to humans. The outbreak was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization (WHO), while the Government of China implemented strict measures to control the spread of the virus, including locking down Wuhan and other cities in Hubei Province, building hospitals and medical observation points and enlisting medical personnel from other parts of China. FAO worked closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences, national partners, the WHO and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) to identify potential animal hosts of the virus and assess its impact on the food security and livelihoods of rural and smallholder farmers. The Government of China has been placing great emphasis on One Health development, which extends beyond the animal-human interface of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. One Health is a concept that recognizes the interconnectedness of plant, animal, human and environmental health, and seeks to promote collaboration across different sectors to achieve optimal health outcomes for all. -
ProjectEnhancing the Production Capacity of Smallholder Rice Farmers in Liberia - GCP/LIR/029/JPN 2021
Also available in:
No results found.Rice is Liberia’s staple food, but over 90 percent of the country’s rice needs is imported at the cost of about USD 80 million a year. Liberia’s population growth has given rise to an increase in the demand for rice. This increase, coupled with low productivity, has led to a deficit in national rice production, as demonstrated by the huge variance between imported rice and local production. In addition, the rice development sector of the country faces multiple threats that challenge the economic and food security of the population. Farmers are constantly experiencing erratic rainfall patterns and unprecedented sweeping winds and floods, resulting in crop failures. Against this background, production patterns in the country are semi rudimentary , and the lack of equipment for agricultural work is one of the main problems faced by rice growers. The project aimed to enhance smallholder rice farmers’ capacity to increase their productivity, through the introduction of modern rice varieties and production techniques, as well as agricultural equipment, in two of the country’s three ‘breadbasket’ counties, Bong and Lofa.
